Reviving a dead topic with a shameless play-asia affiliate link. Mods are welcome to edit this...

I don't know when the sale started or when it ends, but right now the GCN-JP Drill Land is $19.90 at play-asia.

This is one I've wanted for a while so I gotta buy it right away! Guess it's finally time to crack open my GameCube for a region switch.

edit: Put in the switch and got my US Cube to boot to JP dashboard. That was easy. Got a new memory card and formatted it in the JP menu also. Now all I need is the game!

There is a soundtrack ya know. It has all of the Mr Driller music except Drill Land and Drill Spirits. Was there new music for Drill Spirits? I still haven't played it yet.

Gameplay aside I like the weird backstory, with Mr. Driller being the middle son of the characters from Dig Dug and Baraduke, who were married then divorced.

Baraduke girl (Toby Masuyo) is quite the MILF!

I also love her game, I wish Namco would update her license -_-

I just got Drill Land two days ago as my first console-based Driller and the music is astonishing! namco went all-out to make a top grade soundtrack for this game. The orchestration really took me by surprise since I was expecting the typical puzzle game bleeps and bloops from my experience with only handheld versions. The music section of the end credits is huge with many instrumentalists and vocalists.

Yeah, the music in Drill Land blew me away too. Its definitely a must have import for Gamecube. Top notch production values all around.

Aaannd... Mr.Driller Ace (Value Selection) for GBA is back in stock at play-asia and on sale for $14.90.

link

This comes just 2 days after me checking P-A, seeing no stock, and then buying a used copy off eBay for $30. What a Hell!

So I got my Mr.Driller Ace, surprisingly the previous owner was decently good at the game, unlike the previous 3 used Driller games I've bought, where the guys couldn't even clear 1000m.

Anyway, before I erased the save data, I noticed that Usagi was a selectable character in Mission mode. What is the requirement for unlocking Usagi in Mr.Driller Ace? Is it just clearing the 2000m South Pole mission with Ataru or something?

edit: nevermind, looks like it's sufficient to clear South Pole using any character?

a question about Mr. Driller / DC

i somewhere read something about a "perfect air bonus" - i grabbed every single aircapsule in arcade-mode and didn't get anything special for it in the end :?

or is the "perfect air bonus" you were talking about just the combined values of all the capsules?

I had Driller 2 PCB with the air capsule bonus.. Doesn't appear to work or feature in the DC one.

I got a medal or special accolade on the DC one once, maybe I 1cc'd it.

I am not entirely sure but I don't think there is any kind of score bonus for drilling them. They are basically there to screw you by prematurely removing support from underneath you, so that things can start falling all around you before you are prepared for it, at least in Mission mode.

Do the PCBs have a Time Attack mode? The star crystal blocks act as platforms that you have to run across in some of the levels, and you're screwed if you are too slow and they disappear.

yeah, i think you're probably right iatneh, as they aren't listed anywhere in your end bonuses. i have a japanese strategy guide kicking around if i can find anyone to help with a translation :?:

no, no time attack mode. i need to get round to beating egypt to unlock the north pole.

hmm, that's weird about the video signal...

and does that mean that she's very good ... or you're very bad? :P

edit: i think G does have a time attack mode, that's cool. and Cosmos, which sounds like it's a 50,000m challenge !? i gotta get me a driller G

Those scores by JPJ don't tally up with the DC version. On a good run for me I'm hitting 585k on 1000m without all the air capsules. I have only 1 lifed the DC version maybe twice in my whole life.

One thing I don't like about MD is that the game starts at a slow pace and you have to time the button presses slower. By 800m i'm at rocket speed, its so gratifying when you pull off 100m at 800m depth without dying and going at lightning speed.

Post your recent top scores people! Don't be shy!

Edit: BTW, the score system on ALL console ports of Driller 1 are identical to the arcade version. Beating the game in Driller 1 1000m is the very first step, but even that can give you scores anywhere between 500k and 999999 (where it maxes out). Don't think they have different scoring systems, it's the people playing who have different skills!

Very addictive game, I have the PS1 version. I played it quite a bit until I got Mr. Do! for my SNES, and then I kind quit playing it (digging games). I'm going to start playing it again.

I did not know about Susumu's mother, a most interesting videogame fact. It seems such a poor reflection of modern society that even videogame characters get divorced.

Yes, there is a Mr. Driller 2 for windows, and I have it!

It is the only version released for home that is close to arcade perfect.

If you guys have any questions at all about the series, I can answer them for you. I have yet to meet somebody that knows more about the series than I do. I know most of the subtle differences about the games, as well as the obvious ones. I love talking about this game....me and a friend are both hopelessly addictive, and I can't wait to finally create the driller forum/score ranking site. I really hope it can get people in this country interested.

I will post a link soon to videos of my play taken directly out of my arcade machine! For now though, nice to meet you all! Great to meet fellow gamers with great taste in games!
