extra weapons only available in 2-player mode?

Post by lewisit »

maybe someone here can help :)

i'm looking for arcade-shmups that have special weapons available when playing co-op in 2-player-mode - like the attachments in Trigon/Lightning Fighters:

maybe even a feature like combining ships or something...

any hints?

Battle Greagga has a special option formation were the players options form a chain between the players. I've never done it though.

The players' ships could combine in Side Arms. There's a vertical shooter with combining ships, too, though I can't remember its name right now. It was either for arcade or NES.

I guess you could count Pop'n Twinbee, where the players could hurl around each other.

The mega-destructive stars from being hit with the other player's shots in
Raiden.

Also, the co-op mode in Tyrian.

Raiden Fighters lets both players use a mega charged attack.

Also, Dogyuun has combining ships too.

raiden fighters 1, 2 and jet all have 2player combined specialweapons.

Raiden 3 and 4 combines both players regualr weapons when they are in close proximity to eachother.

i think STG strike gunner also has a combine-both-ships-into-one 2player mode?

Wasn't there a combination effect in Sonic Wings 2 or 3?

Yeah, I was going to mention that game. It's useful when your friend is in a pinch and you call him over to your side, effectively saving him.

Or you can be an ass, wait for a ton of bullets to come your way, and call your friend to join you in death :)

in Raiden 3 is very useful when playing on double-mode.

Gokujou Parodius - Shooting your partner makes him/her angry, which results in him/her unloading his stored anger via huge blasts.

Sadly the only Parodius I played in 2P mode, so I don't know whether this feature is also in the prequel/some sequels.

You're thinking of Terra Cresta. Great combine-em-up.

The recent 1942 Joint Strike has, as the name implies, "Joint Strikes" where both players combine attacks. Best of these is the "clothesline" of lightning between ships.

Aegis Wing has souped up attacks by combining the ships together.

Hyperdyne Sidearms PCB is the one that allows either 1P side or 2P side to get the cool "Alpha-beta" icon and change into two different combined super powered mecha suits. Getting such a suit allows for two direct hits to it before it seperates and explodes. Why Capcom never did a sequel to it, I'll never know. Sidearms PCB does have subtle references to the Nasicuaa: Valley of the Winds anime film -- the remains of a leftover "Fire Demon" that rained fire on the Earth in the so-called "Seven Days of Fire" incident.

Super Stardust HD makes you both stronger if you're close. Implemented so one guy didn't bugger off round the back of the planet on the original co-op mode with one camera :)
