Guilty pleasure. Ikaruga, Again.

Post by gennss »

So I put my dreamcast copy of Ikaruga which I've had forever it seems and I notice it has a tiny superficial scratch (It's had it for years) and I start to worry again. I eye my xbox360 from across the room, and start going over my bank account in my head.

So I spent 12 bucks got some xbox credits, got ikaruga, ikaruga theme and ikaruga icons.

AND I botched my sleep cycle. So now I'm at work with 3 hours of sleep feeling slightly twitchy wondering which way i should flip.

:D

Feel a little guilty about buying something I already have... but it was fun.

You could have legally downloaded the cracked image, because you own the original. Could have taken you under 10 minutes to get it burnt into your dc. Next time, consult us. 8)

I'm not sure this has ever been tested in court. It might be fair use / fair dealing, but I've never heard of a ruling or analysis to that effect.

I think you're right, he should have just bought a new copy of Ikaruga for the dc. That's what I would want people to do if I sold games and no renting/borrowing/one time backing up/trading/selling/buying secondhand videogames.
Stealing from a store? not a problem, because the game developers/publishers still got their money already!

Why? Just play your DC copy. Unless that scratch is the infamous "1/4 Inch In Arc Of Death", then the game will run just fine.

Hell. I bought a copy of TSS off some guy on Ebay and the surface of the disc was scratched to fuck. It still works perfectly though. Unlike my damned near pristine copy which has the Arc of Death (the music won't load).

Sooo, in my impatience i spent $12 on an awesome game ...

my dc version works fine... It's beautiful. ::sigh::

Of cause, the original acrade version run on Naome, the DC version is acrade perfect (same hardware with 4M less RAM).

You should just play your DC copy until it won't work. Then you just take it to some surfacing service. If that won't work, then you just bought another DC copy on eBay.

Afraid of scratching your expensive game disc, and thus playing lesser version or damaging your console by playing backup copy is silly. Why should you buy/own/keep the expensive version in the first place?

Trading down to lesser version for cash is another story though.

I played the game for 100+ hours and still suck at it compared to most of the people here. I remember watching Plasmo's replays (among others) 3-4 years back and they've helped me getting better quite a bit. Still, a very tough/time consuming game to master, imo. ***Especially the nightmarish 4-2 ***

Those video's are crazy. Chains really are insanely important to a high score.

And nah no need for a backup, my copy works great, i have a jp dreamcast imported, and i have the xbox live version now. Though changing platforms in either direction doesn't seem to improve my score.

I've never seen a ruling on it myself neither. I've seen the US law interpreted a couple of different ways, but from what I've gathered reading it, the backups apply to either the copyright owner of the software who is allowed to keep backup/archive copies in case something happens to the original and are to be used to replace the original. If the original is sold to a new copyright holder, so too must the backups/archives, and vice versa. As far as discs/carts go, you own the medium and can use the medium and software according to whatever terms copyright holder has set which, in most cases, doesn't include making a copy the software.

The other instance is in the case of software that is installed (as on a computer). You can have 1 copy, the copy that is installed, or more if the copyright holder grants such (multiple installations). You can also make a backup of the installed copy in case something happens to it. What's a stickler is how this applies to consoles which now can install games and download content.

But, like I said earlier, the law is open to interpretation.

In the US your'e allowed to back up your media. It doesn't give you the right to download a copy from another source.

If it was possible, I would download every single shmup title I own onto my XBLA or WiiVC just so I wouldn't have to play the actual discs.
