One of the first that comes to mind is Stargate. Despite its age, there are a good number of scoring possibilities and strategies (the biggest of which, if I recall correctly, ends after stage 20 on default settings). It's certainly MAMEable, and has many ports to boot. Of course, it might not be very popular since there's no actual end, which means it would be a "play till you run out of ships" entry.

Another one could be Thunder Force AC. End of game bonuses, level bonuses for weapons you haven't lost (you get these when picking up a power up you still have), and it has areas with enemies that are regularly spawned (making risk taking to get those extra points an option). The scores would likely be very close (possible ties?), but cranking the difficulty all the way up in MAME would help that a bit.

I believe Pulstar was being considered for a previous contest (I could be wrong), and G-Darius might also be a possibility (it has a scoring set up not that far removed from 'Gaiden', sans the uber autofire). For shits and giggles, In the Hunt could be looked into, along with perhaps R-Type Leo. I don't believe either has a scoring system beyond blowing shit up, but they've got a lot of shit to blow up. Salamander II comes to mind as well, but I don't know how well it emulates, or how people would feel about a relatively short looping shmup.

Progear is more popular than ESP.Ra.De, and doesn't have a ton of milking (though I'll admit the scoring system does have its problems). Does Batsugun Special work well enough in mame? Is there anything that could potentially make it unplayable?
Very well.
Though both are pretty much "bang head off nearest wall" type games, so six and two threes.

And Batsu Spesh? Aside from slight background corruption at the start and end of stage1, and graphical glitching with the tanks on the stage4 boss, nothing else. (Just gave it a whirl in MAME+ 0.118u2.)

Horis?
Blazing Star is done already, so no (unless you want a week of pain).
Pulstar lacks a scoring system, and is quite R-Type-like, which might rub some people the wrong way.
TFAC? Far too easy.
Hyper Duel? LOL.
G-Darius is difficult to emulate as it is on 3D-based hardware. Ports are fine, but what about the people without the ports? And we did Darius Gaiden last year.
R-Type Leo, maybe. Ditto Metal Black.
Others include Eco-Fighters, Salamander 2, most of the Parodii, XEXEX, Macross 2, Sengoku Blade (watch the ALL Clears roll in), Chariot, Thunder Cross, Thunder Cross 2, and a bunch more I can't be arsed to remember.

The 4th week, which seems to be "3 random games," doesn't have much of a theme, but I don't really care since they're good games so whatever.

IIRC Batsugun still doesn't have music in MAME but lol music.

Favouritism, much?
Shhhh, leave it the way it is and they will split the vote. :o

Bonus: GP complaining about this. Ok, maybe not a bonus.

It doesn't have much sound, either, which is a bigger problem IMO.

Batsugun special is playable, though it's pretty damn fugly, and there is almost no sound. I'd rather not play it if possible, even though it is a good game (if ridiculously easy during the first loop). If nothing else, a ton of people will complain about the fucked emulation.

Also, there's honestly nothing wrong with Thunder Dragon II. It's a good, underrated game.

I'll be out until Sunday, though I might check the forum once or twice until then.

What about single screen week with something like Galaga '88, Super Space Invaders '91/Majestic 12, or Space Invaders '95/Akkinvader?

Varth seems fine. It takes about an hour to complete. The japanese version, unlike the world and US versions, makes you restart a level when you die which is harder when you don't know the game that well, but it also allows "point maximization" to occur (killing your lives off for more points than what the 100k/life end bonus gives you). I'm not really sure how the person who has the arcadia record improved the old record from 10.75m to 15.5m though... Something to do with being able to restart an entire level though, I'm assuming. Bosses time out. At some point in time, the extra life defaults in MAME changed from 600k and every 1.4m over to 600k/2m/4.5m.

It really isn't that difficult and the 'secrets' are easy to find. ;)

The defaults in MAME fit better for the US/World version instead of the Japanese version.

And I don't want people to play that version, it'll cause Gun Frontier-grade IRL suicides.

Varth: Why would we play the Japanese version if it has checkpoint abuse? Let's stick with the US/World version.

I bumped in Thunder Dragon II for Not Taito Week, and put RFJ in Famous Manic Week.

The game choices in the first post are final, barring a broken scoring exploit in one of the games.

I would refrain from saying something like that was interesting until I had played the game and tried to make a high score that way.
