Voted Giga Wing.

If it were for the soundtrack alone, GWG followed closely by Night Raid. Takumi soundtracks are usually awesome.

And fuck Mars Matrix. :D

Man, you've got to be a real snob to dis any of these games. I've got my criticisms about them, but I think they're amazing, totally beautiful, awesome shmups. Definitely in the upper ranks of anyones collection, I'd think- none of these in the lower ranks.

Takumi rules.

I agree, although I've never played Night Raid or Gigawing Generations. BTW, I thought Twin Cobra II was developed by Toaplan. :?:

beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think that both GW and GW2 look extremely shit. They both look like the art was done by loads of different people and no one knew what the other guys were doing at all. There is no consistency whatsoever (and apart from that I do not like the gameplay tho that is totally subjective obviously)

I'd have to say that for those of you who do have the PSX port of Night Raid, there are some cool bonuses that aren't present on the original Taito G-Card version of the same name.

The cool bonuses are:

All new CGI opening intro
Extra mode of gameplay

Night Raid is pretty cool for it's abstract presentation/gameplay. Mars Matrix wins hands down for having most bullets shot on-screen all aiming towards the player. MM is Takumi's vision of danmaku with their signature brand of cool scatterfire added in for good measure. ^_~

One interesting thing about MM that I never noticed till I played the dreamcast version are the cool backgrounds. In the arcade, they seem pretty flat at times, and in some of the remix stuff, it seemed that they left blank spots in the action just as bits of good paralax was were happening. It seemed that the arcade had some busy spots at those same times, that blocked the views.

Flat is putting it lightly. CPSII Mars Matrix has to be one of the ugliest games on the hardware and easily one of the ugliest games of that era. The Dreamcast version puts a quantum leap forward in terms of looks, last I checked. It still looks pretty lousy, pre-rendered and all.

The smudgy pre-render of Mars Matrix burns your eyes out with jaggies. Pre-render sprites are really noticable when you have smudgy undercooked centers with burnt and crispy edges.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.
