Retro Console shooters questions (Saturn)

Post by gennss »

I couldn't find much using the search function, and google searching doesn't bring out much other than advertising.

I'm familiar with dreamcast shooters, however I also own a US and a JP saturn. I don't have much for them except a few 2d fighters. What shooters are good for the saturn? Perfectly ready to import since I own a JP saturn.

Thanks

There's a lot. But my personal cream of the crop:

Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Dodonpachi
Galactic Attack / Layer Section / Rayforce
Radiant Silvergun
Soukyugerentai
Thunderforce V

I aslo held onto Strikers 1945 (best port available) and Guardian Force because it's unique and wasn't ported elsewhere.

Can't go wrong with subcons' stuff. Darius Gaiden is a brilliant game, too, and its low price makes it essential Go go go!

If you have a bit of disposable income, see:

Soukyugurentai
Sexy Parodius
Gokujou Parodius Deluxe Pack
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Salamander Deluxe Pack
Metal Black

This is sarcasm btw.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

i can't stand mars matrix (though i haven't had that same feeling with any other shooters) Does that eliminate any from the list?

is Radiant Silvergun as big as the hype?

i wouldnt recommend Radiant as your first shmup, its not very shmuppy and is quite an acquired taste (i dont really like it as a game), my personal recommendations would be

1) Battle Garegga
2) Soukyugurentai

Soukyugurentai i would probably get first, its magnificent looking and has gameplay to match too

Layer Section is awesome and kinda cheap. So, it would be a good start pointing.

Both Batsugun and Battle Garegga are excellent games, and you should get both.

And for some horizontal action, I think the Konami Deluxe Packs aren't all that expensive on the Saturn... get either the Salamander or Parodious one (The Parodius one is EXCELLENT).

I don't know how much Cotton Boomerang costs, but it's IMO the best shmup you can play on the system. It's damn awesome, and too much underrated.

I'd also start with Layer Section. It's dirt cheap and an extremely well balanced shooter that isn't extremely hard. Very straight forward and fun to play. It was my first for the Saturn (actually came with the one I bought used).

As for Radiant Silvergun, I think it's a game everyone should at least experience. It's just so epic feeling. Definitely unlike any other shooter out there. If it doesn't seem worthy of owning to you, just turn around and sell it to get your money back, simple as that.

Well, if you want to get the expensive one out of the way first, then yes. Battle Garegga would be a fine choice.

No, Battle Garegga is for the seasoned shmup player. Its scoring system and the furious rank system makes it a toughie to recommend as a first shmup.

I second BATSUGUN as a must buy first shooter!

It's not on the cheap side. Complete copies in great shape rarely turn up, and when they do they're like 70-80$. You're right about it being awesome though.

Darius Gaiden is a no-brainer. It's still pretty cheap, and the replay value is probably the greatest out of all the Saturn shmups. Plus, the soundtrack is excellent (typical Zuntata).

Salamander is a bit more than Parodius, though. Parodius is more in the 20-30 range and Salamander is more in the 45-60 range.

I agree on Parodius. The pack rocks. It's worth getting for Gokujo Parodius alone (though Da! is great too). I also recommend Batsugun. Good stuff!
