Could 360 become the ultimate shmup system?

Post by OdiousTrident »

This is the system's first few years and we are seeing a shocking amount of shmups, classic and otherwise. If this trend continued until the end of the system, its entirely possible the 360 will come out on top in sheer numbers. I'm sure some people won't agree with this, but what do you guys think?

I don't know about comparing numbers-wise to the PS2 or Saturn, but I do think it's a safe bet to assume that it will be "the shmup machine" of its generation, as neither of its rivals have near as much as it does.

Did you forget that "Some new Galaga" is called "Galaga Legions" and that it'll probably be released on August 20th?

Or is this another Galaga we're talking about?

Also Omega Five.

Quantity-wise the PC Engine is also on near the top, with a shmuplibrary of over 100 titles (counting hu-cards and CDs and everything here). Counting all the PS2 shmups gets tricky due to all the retro releases and collections that include shmups, but I'd guess the number is similar if not higher.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Wasn't Triangle Service going to port Shooting Love 2007 as well?

And also the recent R-Type Dimensions announcement.

(Do Rez and Geometry Wars count?)

Hm the Xbox might get some decent shmups, but the controller still sucks ass for shooters. I liked even the d-pad of the wiimote better (to control shiki3), and that's saying something.
The obvious answer to that might be: then get a stick.
But i guess i am not a stick-person. ^^"

Can't let controllers get in your way.

Convert, and use whatever you want to

For my PS2, I use a Hori Anashin for d-pad games, a max shooter adapter to use keyboard for shmups, and an xbox controller for analogue games. :)

This one's quite expensive, PLUS i had to buy a wired controller.
If it were cheaper and wouldn't have to rely on a wired controller it would be all cool.

Having no interest in the console, I hope it doesn't become this gen's shmup system, but it is looking like that's how it will turn out.

Mod your dpad! If you play Omega Five (which is a great original shmup for the 360 btw) you owe it to yourself.

Or go the custom stick route.

The Wii is a much better system in regards to shmups. Check out the VC as well as Star Soldier R, Shiki III, Blast Works, upcoming Space Invaders + Milestone Shooting Collection etc. etc.

Sheer number on the 360... no.
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

It´s pretty depressing that all that kept the d-pad from working properly was too much plastic on the casing, meaning that it wasn´t bad electronic parts but simply stupid design.

I mean, really, we´re moving backwards d-pad history until they are as bad as the Atari 2600 ones. I still wonder why the DS Lite pads suck so bad compared to the GBA or SNES ones.

I'm also rooting for the Wii to become this gen's shmup system, but even I find your statement to be a bit ridiculous.

Shiki, Blast Works, and Star Soldier are awesome, but the Milestone collection will be mediocre because Milestone is mediocre, and none of these are good substitutes for Ketsui, DDP, Raiden 4, and New Treasure Game. Also, while the VC has lots of awesome ROMs (R-Type, Gley Lancer, too many to list) new ports (Ikaruga, THE) are cooler than old ROMs.

Still, I'm looking forward to the upcoming Gradius WiiWare title, and maybe some more shmups will drift towards the Wii before too long.

Unfortunately these next generation console shmups (Omega 5, Galaga Legions, Otomedius, ...) require analog sticks! So fancy custom sticks are out of the picture (much less real arcade controls).

I think you forgot about the QUALITY side of things. Blast Works is nice IF you're into the editor and Milestone...well, nothing wrong with the DC versions.
Imo it's pretty much a fact that the oh so evil Microsoft is putting in a lot of effort to bring some shmup goodies to xbla. Even though the canning of xbla cave stuff was not such a smart move...

The atari 2600 had d-pads?

What? No they don't. I played Omega Five with the d-pad, and Otomedius' limited edition COMES WITH an arcade stick.

Thats irrelevant though, as the point was that Otomedius, obviously, DOES support joysticks. :P
