Yeah, it's old school. But I love the theme, sounds and design of this game. (More than I do the actual gameplay!)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinistar
Is far, far older than that. (Older than TF1 or even Wolf3D for that matter.)
Granted the Heavy 'borrows' a couple of Sinistar's catch phrases in homage, but Sinistar is the original. http://www.sinistar.com/origsin.html
These phrases also fill me with rage. They're so useless.Aru-san wrote:I thought it was "Let's see whatcha got, rookie." for that last sentence, but I hear a "Watch yourself, kid." at the 1st boss, too.LGB wrote:First stop, enemy outpost. You just broke my mind (again). Ghost is awesome!JoshF wrote:For real quotes, I'd have to agree that the Donpachi guy is the best for playing the role of Ghost from Sewer Shark.
Also, I have to say that I DO like some of the phrases from Batrider - Welcome to Violent City! and "Marverous" are nice.
I guess this is one of those "did yu catch me on my period" type topics.

I have a fondness for the powerup voices in Gradius games.
"SPEEDUP!"
"MISSILE!"
"DOUBLE!"
"LASER!"
"OPTION!"
"SHIELD!"
I also get a kick out of "OH MY GOD!" in Parodius if you are stupid enough to activate the "?" option and lose your powers.
Raizing games have good voice acting as well, especially the ones from Batrider and Dimahoo.

Okay, you make the mistake of selecting the "?" option. Happened to me once in the one with that pillow-shaped that spits powerups at you.LGB wrote:It's not that stupid.FatCobra wrote:I also get a kick out of "OH MY GOD!" in Parodius if you are stupid enough to activate the "?" option and lose your powers.

I was being facetious. Of course, I haven't played Galaxies, but the "staarrrrt" doesn't fit in with the regular voice samples at all.FrederikJurk wrote:True. I just recently found out about this feature and was surprised of how much these artificial voices remind me of Gradius Galaxies, Psyvariars "Level up" and Gigawings "OK" :) I really love that, maybe because of that Kraftwerk - Radioactivity record I had as a child that uses a lot of robotic voices like that.Ed Oscuro wrote:"Staaaart" from Gradisu garaxi
that Mac Text to Speech voice really fits in with the classic gradioos voice samples
It also sounds stupid.
Re: Coolest Voice Sound in a Shmup
Ikaruga's (onboard computer ?) is probably my favorite, but Dangun Feveron and Dimahoo announcers are pretty cool, too.
Also the voices in Twinkle Star Sprites are funny and decent. Characters speak when they are hit, grab a fever item, win/lose, send special attacks, etc. which is not very common in a shoot'em up game.
Individual voice samples I think work great (but mentionned before...) :
Ketsui's death scream, 'though it is a detail, it is a fine one
"Shoot the core" (I have only played Gradius V's)
On the opposite, one of the most annoying announcer for me would be Blazing Star's. Screaming "BONUS" too often
edit: whoops, this was an old thread. Sorry

Raizing games had great voice samples. Batrider with its general magnificent presentation is the best, so many memorable voices.

Don't get mad at me if I say this, but... I like Aya Hirano as Saya in DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou. It's like she's really talking to me.
Re: Coolest Voice Sound in a Shmup
Start of stage 2 - "Enemy attack! Battle stations, battle stations! All hands to battle stations! This is not a drill! I say again: This is not a drill!"
I love how the announcement fits perfectly with the music and with what is happening on screen.
Approaching the stage 4 boss - "The enemy force approaches the control tower. Engage. Engage."
Now if only I knew what they were saying in German..
