Heh, too true. I just remember Akira way back getting all mad at me one time for putting Robotron in my top 5 "shmups" list.

Anyway, played this quite a bit at work. I hit 22 mil on Pacifist. I wish that would have been on my personal account, as I got a little lucky in a few spots. That mode and King are all I've been playing. I tried for quite a while to get that "Treaty" achievement, but I couldn't get over 28 zones before getting swarmed.

Edit: Wait. What the hell is this doing on shmups chat? Have you guys gone soft and allowed dual-stick shooters to be called shmups? Back in the day you could get some shit for talking about Galaga because it didn't scroll up, hence no "shmup".
I would hope that people would stop impressing such a limited definition on the genre. I mean, seriously. You fly around space and shoot stuff. What else could you call it? :P

That Wax Off achievement is going to drive me crazy. I managed 99% once, can't get anywhere close again. The problem is that it's going to keep bugging me until I get it, which makes it a bit hard to improve on my pacificism score (stuck around 6.5m ot so right now.) I seem to be alternating between Deadline and Pacifism mostly right now.

hardly anybody on my friends list has bought this game, despite me bugging the shit out of them to buy it.

my gamertag is "paulie pancakes" (w/o the quotations) if you'd like to add me for a little indirect scoring competition.

The Japanese disagree with you. They're dominating the leaderboards.

Note to self: "stragetic vote" a bunch of arena shooters into the stgt. Let's hear it for Mu-cade.

Yes, there isn't a ton of depth and there's perhaps too much randomness, but don't ask too much of these games and they won't disappoint. Nice graphics, pick-up-n-play gameplay, intensity... there's enough to warrant the $10 and then some.

Indeed. I't s just a little bit silly to be comparing a $2000+ PCB to a $10 download game.

I had the same thing happen a few times before I got it (stuck at 99%). The trick for me was to get all the Wax On ones right away, and then start killing off as many as I could and work my way around again. You won't be able to just get lucky and make two laps, but if you're aggressive you'll create your own openings. My score was 20 mil when I finally got the achievement, so it's not a quick one to get; you really have to keep killing and grinding to get it.

This might have meaning if it didn't apply with almost all leaderboards.

I have to agree with this part. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the game- but I wish there was an option to tone the bloom down a bit- I can't play it for extended periods of time. Reminds me of being young and staying in the pool/sun too long and being all blurry afterwards.

I tried it too, and during gameplay i thought that i was pretty tired, because of all the things bluring out. But then i found out it was the game's fault ^^"
I think it's meh.

In what way does the bloom affect the gameplay? I can see my ship at all times despite what the screen is doing.. If you look at the ship there is a slight shadow around it that keeps the ship visible at all times.

Finally got the treaty achievement after like 40 tries this weekend. Best on that mode is still only 4 mil. Some kid on my friend's list has 275 million on Pacifist. I don't even dare to look at the real leaderboards lest I just give up playing.

Daaaaamn. I guess that's what the non-shmup players feel like when they see someone 1CC Dodonpachi. It looks like magic from the outside looking in. My question is, "When the hell did i get on the outside?" I feel old now. I've always been pretty good at Robotron and Smash TV, but getting a billion in pacifist? Maybe the game will begin to reveal itself to me, but I've been hunting 50 million and thinking that was solid goal.

I'm tired of being top of my friends list on the leaderboards. If you're good at this game please add me to your list...

Depends.

What's your score list?

If you're higher than me, then no way! Otherwise, I'll add you and gloat.

i can honestly see getting a billion on a good run. my best so far is 206,310,400 . as you keep playing your multiplier keeps going higher and your score rises exponentially so after playing for a bit you can get literally millions of points for every gate you pass. i'm guessing in another 10 to 15 seconds i could of doubled that, and that a billion point game would only conceivably be another 30 seconds or so. and a good part of this mode is luck as far as where the gates spawn, how they spin and group together.

monoRAIL---good to see some competition. and damn good score on deadline. i've got some work to do now :D

It's starting to click now. Best so far is now 75 mil on Pacifist, but that felt like a really short game. It surprised me how quickly the multiplier can rise. Plus, in Pacifist, you're constantly absorbing huge globs of geoms as you break apart the "blob" with the gates. I'm still hunting to finish Sequence mode, but I keep coming up one or two stages short. That "Smile" achievement is still out of reach for me right now.

I'm going to have to get a lot better at this game.

I plan on adding a few of you guys to my friend's list when I get home. This is one of the first games on Xbox live where I am actually making use of the friend's leaderboards. I keep getting better, but seeing some of the Pacifism scores out there, I've got lots of work to do.

All in all, Geometry Wars2 is the second best purchase I have made on XBLA, right after Ikaruga.
