Should I buy a 13" Sony Wega?

Post by Nate »

Anyone here have one? What are they like? Do they last long? I know the picture is going to be awesome. Do they rest securely when you flip them? They have composite video inputs. I like the idea of small video that looks crystal-clear with separate (BIG) audio. Will I be able to see everything from 7 or 8 feet away? Or, should I get closer?

I want to play all of my horzies on it and all my TATE'ables on the half-dead Trini from the early 90's-on top of which my new Wega will hopefully sit-possibly fixed on some kind of makeshift Lazy Susan or other swivel platform...

Thoughts?

If you want your stuff to be really red then get it.

The red push Sony TVs have is unbeleiveable. I'll never get another sony TV again.

*But if you can find one more than 3-4 years old you will be ok because you can fix the red push with the service menu. The newer set wont allow you the option to do this.

Hi Nate,

I don't think Sony do Wega's at 13" with just composite, so you might as well use the svideo or component inputs if you get one for a much better picture.

JVC do a cute component input 13" for about $140.. Pricey, but you have all the options available.

Get an Amiga 1080 series monitor. Fraction of the price, and you can make or order cables for that baby for all your consoles. And way, way better picture. And wait until you play your DVDs on PS2 on RGB using the RegionX player thingy. Gorgeous.

Specineff, that sounds like a plan...it's about time I get some quality video in my life...

What's the best avenue to take in finding one? Links possibly?

Thanks!

Spec, are you talking about this?

I'm most likely getting this, and I'll perhaps seek your guidance in acquiring the cables later...

Use the search function and the hardware forum. Get a 1084S because it offers stereo sound while the 1080 has mono.

That's my exact Amiga monitor. It works wonders and it will be the last thing I ever sell should I find myself in need. However, for the cables you might need to turn to Matt, if he's available. I know that the PS1 and 2 have really dim output when on RGB, so a special circuit must be integrated in the cables.

I thought it was 14 inches. :?

Maybe 14", 13" viewable. I always thought it was 13" in some way, could be wrong.

Just hooked up my brand-used series 1080. Got it on ebay for around $60. Shipping was $48 (from Canada). My Dad scored it for me...

All I can say is...

WOW!

I'm looking at the Bangai-oh demo right now and everything looks scary good. And I'm running just normal RCA cables! I can't imagine what this baby looks like w/ better cables. Seriously this is good enough for me for now. I'll get some snazzier cables for it later. The audio is fine. I'll hook the whole stereo thing up later. Right now I just want to jam on it!

Thanks Specineff. I'm glad I took your advice!

Couple of questions regarding proper care for my new monitor...

Will it ALWAYS look this good?

Is it ok to leave it on?

Would it hurt it any less to flip it?

And, what is the signifigance of the switch in the back?

I think everyone should have one of these. I'm thinking about getting another one.

No. It will only look that good until you start using RGB. Then it will start looking much, much better.

It also accepts S-Video, BTW.
Is it ok to leave it on?
As with any monitor, you probably shouldn't leave it turned on when you're not playing it, because it sucks juice and ever so slowly puts wear and tear on the components.

But, since monitors like these were built to be enjoyed via shooter playing, you shouldn't feel bad about using it.
Would it hurt it any less to flip it?
Flipping will not hurt. These monitors are perfect for Tate gamers!
And, what is the signifigance of the switch in the back?
What does the switch say? If it's the "TTL/Analog" switch, the significance is that you should always leave it in analog mode in order to enjoy RGB from game consoles.

Everyone should have at least two of these monitors.

It says RGB mode...then underneath it has Digital w/ subheadings pos. and neg. and opposite (on the right) says "analog".

I don't see an S-Video port it obviously doesn't have one - I guess you'd have to go into the RGB port w/ special modified cables? Mine was manufactured January 1986.

PM on the way.

Thanks.

I had a philips Amiga monitor back in the day. Truly unbelievable picture quality. If your happy with composite you will be blown away with RGB.. Its like everything just looks razor sharp.

OT Sony 13"

Post by trivial »

I want to speak in defense of my little TV and its lack, pace neorichie, of an S-Video input. Its comb filter is remarkably effective and there's something to be said for a flat-fronted tube's gameplay advantages, pace every arcade manufacturer ever.
:P
Its component inputs won't sync to my DTV receiver's 480i out, but the composite isn't actually awful with this kind of dot pitch. Quite possibly an ideal monitor for the PS1/N64 if you hate seeing pixellation in your polygonal games and you're too lazy to do a real RGB mod. I finished Ikky for the first time with it, TATE of course, before ever getting a component cable for my gamecube.

And no, 7-8' isn't a good viewing distance for playing games on any 13" monitor. Try 4'. At that distance, you're certainly going to see pixel edges on these old spheroidal RGB monitors. That may not matter in sprite-based games, depends on your taste. But they look awful to me with aliased sprite scaling, or low resolution polygons, and interlacing.

That's the point. Some of us like our video to be nice and sharp. I sit about 3 feet away. Looks great from there.

this "feature" pisses me off no end.

the only reason why i don't ignore the thing now, is i was just informed about the screen setup mode... also its the only tv i own.
I have no sig whatsoever.

Leave it on "Analog". There is also a switch at the front that selects COMPosite (I like to call it compoSHITE, heh), SEParate (This is S-Video, but you need to split the S-video signal onto luminance and color, and connect these to luma and chroma inputs, which are the yellow and red.) and RGB, which is what you can use once you get your cables. You will not go back to composite once you try RGB, my child, I assure you.

One word of advice, on the back you will see the classic white, yellow and red inputs. The red one is NOT for the right channel audio. That's the chroma signal, and should not be used unless you are connecting via an S-video split signal.

To all the folks bitching about Sony:

The service menu can still be accessed by inputting one of the following codes on the remote while the TV is off:

[DISP], [5], [VOL+], [PWR ON]

-or-
[DISP], [5], [PWR ON]

-or-
[DISP], [5], [VOL+], [PICTURE], [PWR ON]

I have a 34" XBR, and the picture was good when set to the "monitor" profile, but there was still red push, which was fixed playing with the service menu.

(note that you should look up directions before you play, because you can potentially screw up your TV with the service menu)
