Best Shmups for the PC?
Lately I have been trying to find some good shmups for the PC. My knowledge of shmups pretty much only extend from arcades and consoles so the PC is a fairly new platform to me for shmups. I recently discovered the Touhou games and have been playing the demo of Perfect Cherry Blossom like crazy. I also know of some games by cactus (Clean Asia, Protoganda Strings, Burn the Trash etc..) but that is pretty much it. Anyways, I would be very grateful if anyone could give me a few recommendations

If you're a fan of Gradius and/or MSX shmups (and don't mind crappy-ass scrolling), you should pick up GR3.

This is a pretty decent primer for pc shooters'

Definitely check out Ketna Cho's games, whom that site only briefly mentions. I like his more traditional scrolling shooters, but I found Torus Trooper and Mucade to be pleasant surprises.

There ought to be a death penalty for choosing Kamui over Cho Ren Sha. Sadly, when it comes to pc shmups most players are content with finding 'lite' versions of their favourite arcade/console games.t0yrobo wrote:This is a pretty decent primer for pc shooters'

Didn't this same topic come up last week?
@ 320x240 in the last thread of this nature...I mentioned Kamui but neglected to mention Cho Ren Sha (Kind of forgot =/ ). Thanks for reminding me (even if unintentional) as a month or so ago, I was thinking of giving it another go. It's been some time since I've played it.

Tyrian 2000 and Stargunner are now freeware. T2K is a fun, and long, vertical shmup, while SG is a pretty good horizontal one. There's also Raptor: Call of the Shadows, but that's still sold by 3D Realms on their site (via download). They're all for DOS (or DOSBox) by the way.
There are also some arcade ports for the PC. Layer Section which runs way too fast to playable (but it does look a lot like the arcade original), Darius Gaiden which turned out well, G-Darius which I've not gotten to see firsthand, Raiden II which turned out well, and a really bad port of Raiden. Oh, and there's Raiden III, which is pretty new, and quite good.
Those are the one's that come immediately to mind.

Add Shikigami No Shiro 3 and RayCrisis to the list. They got PC ports.
Hoping for Raiden IV to show up on the comps!
Definitely pick ChoRenSha 68k. That one is amazing.
For a great overload/mindfuck/craziness, you might also wanna try HellSinker. Weirdest shit in a while. Personally, this one was the doujin response to Treasure and it's freaking great. However, the ridiculously engrishy texts, cryptic interface, obscure scoring system and more might sound a bit annoying and/or scary.
Also Radio Zonde. This one is free, it's the predecessor of HellSinker. Hard, also odd, cryptic and brutal. So brutal you still get fucking attacked even during the credits! No mercy, no refuge.

There is a patch for Radio Zonde. It fixes some texture issues.
