How about a compilation of IREM-games ???
Playing X-Multiply with the PSP digipad must be a lot of fun.
And I assume that if there was an IREM-collection, it would definitely hit -again- the PSP because everyone likes to enjoy classic arcade sitdown cabinet shooters with a crappy d-pad in the train while the screen is shaking and the sunshine's reflections encounter the very same.
Oh what the hell.

I agree, Sony aren't giving enough attention to the PS3, IMO-watch their E3 press conference. I don't think it's bad that they are still selling PS2's (see Ceph's comment about how many they've sold) but they need more focus on the PS3.MathU wrote:Excuse me? I take offence to that. Still, if this does get any port, it would be great! I would want Famicom Spartan X-2, the sequel to NES Kung Fu, to be on it!

Perhaps we'd be lucky enough to get a real budget price tag! Let's not discredit a PS2 release because of a speculative price tag though. I do like the idea of a DS release however. And supporting newer formats with quality arcade compilations is always a good thing I guess.Necronom wrote: How many of those millions of PS2 owners are seriously willing to shell out 30-40 €/$ for such a compilation?
Why should anyone play them on a PS2 when they can just fire up the roms in Mame? Xbla/psn/wiiware with online scoreboards sounds more like it. The biggest money maker would probably be a DS port...not much arcadey stuff on it and lots of potential customers.
After afterbirth's PSP D-pad riser post - here's a link to the mod you can do yourself which is very simple and satisfying to do.
I'd prefer to see games, especially niche games with limited appeal, get released on consoles that people actually own.MathU wrote:Excuse me? I take offence to that. I am not a fanboy. Most gamers stopped caring about shmups and arcade games 10-15 years ago. The mainstream "fad" gamers who don't care about the PS2 wouldn't buy TF6 or an Irem compilation for any console. These games are niche, and the console they're on cannot change that.I'm tired of good stuff getting even more relegated to a niche because it's going to the PS2, a console that most gamers stopped caring about a while ago. It is not reasonable to be pissed off because a game you want is coming to a console you own.
Today Sony's report on the recent first quarter of the finacial year (basically April 08 to the end of June 08) came out, and amidst pages of figures I found these details on the Sony consoles sales in that period:Ceph wrote:There are 140 Million PS2s. That's what, 115 Million more than the best selling new system? Take that, new generation.MathU wrote:I would prefer new games get released on current-gen systems. The increase or decline refers to an increase or decline compared to sales in the exact same period of 2007.
Sure, PS2 sales are on the decline compared to April to June 07, but that's to be expected at this phase in the console's lifetime. Check out those software sales though! Even declining that much, I think they still show there's market for a Irem release on PS2.
If it came out on PS3 I'd be happy, but a PS2 version would likely be cheaper!
EDIT: Disabling smilies that change dates to faces!
Without new fans ever, the shoot 'em up fanbase can only shrink. This is not a good thing.MR_Soren wrote:Most gamers stopped caring about shmups and arcade games 10-15 years ago. Of course, that's just an opinion.

I want to keep this little thread alive - maybe the chances for a
a sucess are better if Irem get´s Mails over a longer period of time.
If only one person in a thousand would buy a shmup, it's wise to target the platform with 100 million consoles installed so it will sell well enough to be worthwhile. Why? Because selling a game where it will make some money is better than the alternative - nothing. This keeps a slow trickle of shooters coming out. Unfortunately, this is merely slowing the decline and not adding life to the genre.MathU wrote:Without new fans ever, the shoot 'em up fanbase can only shrink. You are right, the genre needs new fans. Unfortunately, no attempt to create new fans has succeeded. Most stores don't carry the few retail shmups that exist, and the ones that do quickly discount/clearance them because they sell poorly.
The best thing for hooking new players are the downloads on the current-gen consoles. Games like R-Type, Gley Lancer, and Ikaruga can bring in new people, but this also creates the impression that shmups aren't worth more than $5 - $10 which contributes to the retail failures.
Hopefully, somebody will put out a current-gen console-only shmup that has some actual development money behind it, but perhaps they're waiting for the installed bases to increase. In the meantime, I'm going to support good efforts at original development when I can.
Maybe today our chances of seeing "R-Type-Leo" on a
console are bigger - with arcade-games beeing released
on Nintendo-Wii.
So - if you think it can happen write to "Irem" to relase
their arcade-games for download on Wii, Xbox 360, PS 3.
Jochen.
The same goes for Capcom. I wan´t to download, pay and
play titles like 1944 and other unreleased Capcom-arcade-games.

I'd love a compilation too, but Irem isn't a particularly large or important company anymore and I don't know how keen they are on doing something like this. If it comes out though, I'll pony up the $.

Spelunker is awesome. The sequel not so much. The sequel/remake of the first on PSN looks to be rather cool, though. Still not quite enough material for a compilation though...mainpatr1 wrote:As for non-shmup Irem games,Spelunker compilation please.

High budget shmup. Take an arcade shmup model and give it some qualities that games today tend to have, but not all.
Say, an original console shmup with typical arcade difficulty and style, but really amazing graphics and plenty to do. Think if Ikaruga was built to be a console shooter in the first place, we've all seen how well that's done.
These CAVE ports sound a lot like it; the thing is that they're ports, that's all.

I send them a mail as when just to see their reaction. Pretty standard stuff I received back.
Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, we don't have any plan of making compilation of Irem games now, but we view your requests as valuable. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Thank you very much. Sincerely,IREM SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INC.

Re: How about a compilation of IREM-games ???
Hello and greetings from germany ,
two years ago I sent an E-Mail to you asking if Irem plans to release a collection of their
arcade games. Sadly the ( friendly ) answer to my question was "no".
Today I will try again. Capcom, Midway, Tecmo, SNK have already released one or even
more collection of their arcade-games. So I asume there is a chance earning money
with game-compilations.
Irem programmed many great games like R-Type Leo, Gunforce I and II, Mistic Riders ...
Many of this games were never released on a console - but great games like this should
be playable on a console.
If you think a game collection on disc will not make enough money please consider
to sell some of your arcade-games as download games for Wii, PS3 oder Xbox 360
( the X-Box 360 game room really needs some good games from Irem ). By the way
... I loved R-Type dimensions.
I will post this letter to you on
shmups.com.
Hopefully this might encourage other fans of your shmups/ games writing Mails
to Irem. And if one of my dreams comes true - others and myself can play some
of your games on present consoles.
Thanks for your time, greetings from germany and please excuse my definetly not
perfect english.
Today I sent this Mail above to
webmaster@irem.co.jp
So - if some of you might also write Irem we may at least see
R-Type-Leo , Mystic Riders .... at least as download-titles.
Try - there is nothing to loose - but some great classic shmups
frome the time before Cave to get.

Re: How about a compilation of IREM-games ???
I would dearly love an Irem collection on any platform. However... Irem may have a
pretty good idea of the level of demand for classic game releases from the sales
level of things like R-Type dimensions on the X-Box 360 and R-Type (TurboGrafx
version) on the Wii Virtual Console. A large compilation would make it harder
to make money off their more popular titles individually, and might not sell enough
units to justify the work to put together, distribute, and market such a compilation.
I wish it were not that way, but if the numbers would make such a release
economically viable, I'm guessing Irem would have been happy to take advantage
of it long ago. So I wouldn't get my hopes up much yet.

Re: How about a compilation of IREM-games ???
Just to play Devil's advocate for a moment, Sega and it's contemporaries have made a successful habit out of multiple releases of their classic IP in numerous forms, from single digital releases to compilations. I've lost count of how many times the original Sonic games have been release in recent years. The Eidolon wrote:I would dearly love an Irem collection on any platform. However...
However, you're still probably right The Eidolon, as Irem have a little less cash, and a little less mass-market appeal than Sega.

Re: How about a compilation of IREM-games ???
huh? how are Sony even remotely close to MS in terms of homebrew? The Indie segment of XBL has no equivalent over at PSNSony, like MS, are concentrating on homebrew genrally rather then shmups although the amount of ports is tipped towards the 360 at the mo.
