Bad news to round off the week, my much loved Cyvern board has just given up the ghost.
Started by resetting itself during play every now and again. This became more regular, until I decide to reseat the cartridge on the mother board - except that I didn't spot the red arrow marking to indicate the correct orientation of the cart.
So the cart has now been incorrectly connected to the motherboard and powered-up. Needless to say its as dead as a doughnut now.
I'm not sure if there are PCB repairers here in the UK, but given the circumstances, I doubt whether its even worth enquiring.
Can anyone tell me different, or advise of next steps (other than placing a WTB )?
That sucks.
A comment on before the break- I used to have a cyvern that would reset at exact moments in the gameplay (which I'd never seen). I would reset right when the first big tank would shoot the homing missles.

Thanks dpful - it certainly had a habit of resetting at the start of level 2 (with the big tank), but this also extended to interuption at the level 2 boss every now and again - really frustrating, its not as though you can just go and buy another board. Cyvern seems to be a rare beast these days.
Always best to get a back-up of your favorite PCBs as you never know when they'll croak & "bite the dust" these days...
One learns from their mistakes the hard way sometimes as with inserting such carts the wrong...
As with the arcade PCB hobby in general, it ain't exactly a cheap one these days...
Good luck on your search for a Cyvern cart. Yes, they are, indeed, a btich to find these days. Your best bet would be is to search on YAJ from time to time...

Did you try to increase the voltage a little bit ?

Where did you get it? I wonder if it's the same one I had sent back?

Had it a couple of years now, but bought it from videogameimports.com
May see if a Sengeki Striker owner will plug the cart in to test it - if positive I could always get a mobo from coinop express.

Didn't try that Alien Soldier - to be honest the board had worked just fine for a couple of years....if it worked at all now, I'd sure give it a go!!

PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
Thanks PC Engine Fan X, I'll keep an eye on YAJ, may be the only hope - v.sad, I love that game
i had the same problem, the game crashes at the 1st tank at level 2. i indicated the error: in the odd eprom a 0xB turned to a 0xF. to check if that really was the error i looked into the mame debugger at the right address and set a breakpoint. the instruction there normally is a RTS. guess what: the game stopped in the emu after the 1st tank firing 2-3 missels. so this was really the error happening on the real board...!
so the problem was just a bad eprom, and it looked like Kaneko has bought an EPROM charge of ST which shows up errors at the same address. i replaced the chip (reburned another one) and the problem is gone...!
Damn, that's amazing. I just sent mine back for a replacement (I was pretty lucky hey had one).
I should really get into the nitty gritty of pcb repair- seems like it can really pay off.
Well, I've just heard back from the repairers who advise that the mobo is at fault and not the Cyvern cart (relief ) - can any one advise whether Kaneko mobo's are region locked, or all of the same flavour - thought it best to check before posting a WTB.
People actually have Super Nova boards that aren't from Japan?
Jack - I might have a spare one, came from Japan - I bought extras one time because SN boards have a common sound fault which I only recently learned to fix. I'll have a look around, I know I put them somewhere.

That would be stunning Bloodflowers, thanks - PM sent!!!
My Sengeki Striker fires up to "PRESS 1P TO ENTER TEST MODE" every time, whether I switch the test mode dip to ON or OFF
What's up? How do I get the game to just play?
(My Cyvern board also seems to have been plugged the wrong way round after lending it out, and yes its not working. I may try plugging it into the Sengeki mobo...)
