I DID IT!!!!!!! (yes, another Blast Wind thread, =P )

Post by jp »

I know I know, this should just be in the hi score thread, but this has been my "shmupping goal" for the past... year or so now. And I finally did it!!!!!! Oh I've gotten so close... so close... so many heart breaks in Blast Wind, but today... just now... I finally broke 5 million!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

It was intense. Just the night before I got close to 5 million, but the 1st mid-boss of 6-1 got a lucky shot off and killed me. My heart sank when I saw that #3 score, which, if I had had one more life at the end, it would've been over 5 million. Its almost as bad as the #2 score, where I DID do a perfect run, but just barely missed the 5 million.

But today I was on fire. I did everything PERFECTLY to the t. When I hit the first midboss of 6-1, I threw down some fancy foot work (erm... jet work?), dodged to a point, then bombed, BAM! dead.

And when I hit the final boss. Holy shit I didn't even notice the music I was so nervous. I knew that all I had to do was do what I so often do so easily, but I HAD to 1-life the final boss. I HAD to this time. No doubt. And yeah, I used a couple of bombs, but in the end I was dodging... and I won. My hands were shaking and I dropped the controller as the final bonus points screen came up... and when that score hit 5 million, I can't lie, I fuckin' jumped like, "HOLY SHIT I DID !!!!!!!!!!"

So happy. I'm going to go get ice cream. And now I need another shmup goal. Or maybe I'll just keep playing Blast Wind. Try to make my top 10 nothing but 5 mill+. Or try to break 5 mil with the red ship. Who knows.

Oh yeah...

It's amazing fun, and you get two games in one thanks to the vast difference in the feel of the two playable ships.

Nice one Jp - I'm amazed you've done it finally (though I knew you'd be the man to get it!) - that must be a near max score for the game!?

Anyone know the world record? Probably not. No one here even has compelling evidence of an arcade release. A mysterious game indeed.

It was a canceled arcade release, can't recall the original name right now...

Its a blast (har har). Some people around here tend to talk it down because it isn't a difficult game at all, but the level design/music/and general gameplay are so damn good I don't really care about the difficulty (and then there's always Very Hard and playing as the Red Ship, which is pretty rough).

Here's a (somewhat cheesy) review I did of it awhile ago.

Haha, oy, none of the scores on that Hi Score list are even on my top 10 anymore.

Thanks man! Appreciate it!!! Now its your turn to get some crazy high Blast Wind scores. :)

In so far as it being a near max, yes, its near max. Luck aside (from the roulette power-up dealies), I think there was about 15,000 more points I could have had if I did a No Bomb run of the last stage. So technically, 5.1 million MIGHT be possible, but I kind of doubt it. You would basically HAVE to get bombs at EVERY power-up machine AND do 6-1 without using bombs AND No Miss AND end the game with 8 lives. And while beating Blast Wind is easy, beating Blast Wind with 8 lives is not. But even then, I don't know if you'd wind up with enough points to break 5.1 million. There's a certain point in the game where you have to use at least two bombs if you want to score well.

No clue, wish I did though! I would love to have another goal for Blast Wind.

Congrats, jp. That's an impressive accomplishment. Were you using the 1P ship or the 2P ship? Looks like you were using the 1P ship.

1P ship. I'm not entirely sure breaking 5 mill is possible with the red ship (since deals out a good bit less damage thus making killing things quickly in some parts VEEEEERRRRY difficult).
