In a few months nobody will talk about the outer looks of the consoles themselves! Then the games will have to do the job!

Anyone get the feeling that Nintendo is fighting a losing battle?

Very nice, it looks a lot like the 360 and PS3 in that it resembles a standing PC tower but it's still slick in its own way. Love the big blue, LED. Glad to see Nintendo finally made a more mainstream piece of hardware, it should help quite a bit more than the Cube's funky shape.
Looking forward to seeing what the pad looks like, hopefully after this morning/afternoon we will hear more. Wish I coulda gone to E3 this year. Won't get to see Episode 3 on a digital screen this year either.

EDIT: In one very disappointing piece of news (edit) The New York Times is reporting that Revolution will not support HDTV games. Gahhhh! Now we know the VGA support is just a cop out. Only Nintendo could do something so dumb as to make a system which looks like it belongs in a future home theater but then turn around and not support a standard which the other consoles and home theaters will soon use. Brilliant, Nintendo.
I think a MS rep (not Allard, forgot the name) put it well when he/she said "They have no ambition." They do try new things like the DS/touch screen games which I admire but they are still too content to cater to the kid market. I actually now hope the Rev gets a big slap int he face and hurts them, it's the only way they'll ever learn they can't just sit contently in a neutral position.

I am quite happy with the current VGA screen quality and refuse to buy an HDTV on top of a new console...
Maybe it is brilliant!

And I love the quote from the MS rep. he doesn't even know about the Revolution features beyond some sketchy unconfirmed details...
Besides global dominance (ok it's ambitious but being TOO ambitious can hurt you too! ) what ambition does MS have?
Nintendo press conference starting in about 2 hours.

Believe me, I admire Nintendo's willingness to try new things and the VGA out option is much better than buying a $3,000 + plasma. I just worry that if they keep trying to hide in the kid's market they will get stomped this time. By ambition the MS rep is right, they don't have any desire to try and compete which is lame, Nintendo could do some amazing things if they had some new energy.Super Laydock wrote:Like the majority of the market owns a HDTV...Dylan1CC wrote: EDIT: In one very disappointing piece of news (edit) The New York Times is reporting that Revolution will not support HDTV games. Woah, that's supposed to be a NINTENDO device? It's not bright and colorful, like a kid's toy. Pretty sexy if you ask me. I'm still wary of the weird stuff they are trying pull off with this machine, but GC backwards-compatiablity might be worth it. It's all about the games however. No fancy-shmancy techonology can save a console if the games are crap.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that the "Revolution" is the most generic-looking out of the 3 upcoming consoles? I mean, at least the title of "Gamecube" fit the system's design...guess in this case it depends on whether they actually go through with the wonky controller design rumors that have been floating around...

Where are the E3 photos of the PS3?? I've been on several different sites that cover E3, and I haven't seen ANY photos yet.
But yeah, the Revolution does look pretty sexy! It's supposed to be the size of 3 DVD's stacked on top of one another, but it looks even smaller then that! I saw some video of people using their DS's with it, so the DS may be available for use as a controller on the Revolution.

The drive will be able to handle GC discs as well as standard DVDs.
The most interesting part I've heard so far is that games from all previous Nintendo consoles (NES, SNES, N64 and Cube) will be playable on this one. I somehow suspect that you'll need to rebuy games you already have though, unless they can come up with some way to allow you to get access to games you already own on the Revolution. I also suspect that licensing issues will prevent some games from being made available in this fashion.

Anyway, this was certainly a surprise! I think it looks nice also and VGA output has me SOLD!
Sheesh, the PS3 looks like a friggin' Duo!

That's cool that Nintendo is sticking with VGA instead of practically trying to force people to get HD TV's like the 360 is.
Even only Nintendo developed games for the older consoles would be great, but I suspect we'll be getting stuff from the other major manufacturers (Konami, Namco, EA, Taito) too. Probably not Sega, at least for the older games (but I'm sure the thing would easily handle SMS and Genesis stuff though if they were so inclined.)
Rope Tied To The Trigger
Revolution looks fucking awesome. The design kills the XB360 and PS3...
I'm actually really disappointed with Nintendo's press conference. Even though the system looks sleek, they showed zero footage of any of the games. And WHERE is Mario 128?
Satoru Iwata's recipe for a "next generation" revolutionary unveiling:
A)Just show the system, nothing else and act like that is doing the fans a huge favor.
B)Tell Reggie to act enthused even though on the inside Reggie probably wants to slap Satoru back into next week.
C)Show Elektroplankton, Killer 7 and Nintendogs
D)Parade Miyamoto around and tell him to do something funny with Nintendogs
Wow, Iwata, it's no wonder I'm "tired of games" as you say. Just your stagnant bullcrap PR games that is.
Reggie on online gaming:
I'm with ya there, Reggie but...
Oh yes, and Reggie also apparently thinks the fact GBA has outsold the PS2 (duh) is somehow relevant and gives them an excuse not to try and push ahead int he home market:

...I'm not with ya here. Reggie: "I'm about "kicking ass and taking names" but when Iwata tells me to promote a kinder, gentler online experience for the kiddies, I will back him up 100% I mean, I think if my boss Mr. Iwata knew what he was talking about when making online games for children we'd also release a MMO Pokemon but oh well. We really are about change.."Reggie says Nintendo is working to overcome the current "macho style of online games."
Oh yes, and Reggie also apparently thinks the fact GBA has outsold the PS2 (duh) is somehow relevant and gives them an excuse not to try and push ahead int he home market:
Yeah, they created the space, Nintendo just isn't moving ANYWHERE IN IT. It has got to be frustrating for someone so enthusiastic like Reggie to work for such a clueless and dull person like Satoru Iwata."Today, you will begin to understand how our Revolution is preparing to storm the gates." Says Nintendo created the game space and "we're not moving out." He then compares the Game Boy Advance to PS2 in sales -- GBA has sold more than 28 million units in the US, even though it launched eight months later.

^^ Get a grip of yourself Dylan!
It's a small miracle that Nintendo even showed the system itself at this E3.
The REAL revelation will come in the fall at a new Nintendo Spaceworld event in Japan!
Can't blaim them for not showing all the aces up their sleeves right now, can you...
Certainly not after they repeatedly told NOT to come ALL OUT at E3 (to prevent others copying their innovations...)!
And judging by the looks and info so far I'd say bigN may just get it right this time.

I just read the details about Nintendo's press conference today at E3.
So far, Nintendo's hardware impresses me the most-I mean, being able to download EVERY game from the NES-N64!
That's just amazing. And I can't wait to see the new i-pod-esque GBA that they announced; it's supposed to have the best lighting of any previous Game Boy. (although if it's the size of an i-pod, the screen size worries me!) And I like Nintendo's attitude, unlike Sony's and Microsoft's, that graphics aren't everything-they've said that the Revolution won't be a powerhouse compared to the Cube.
I was going to get a Cube, but I may very well just wait for the Revolution!

So they're releasing an emulation box?
Color me bored.
Old games are great, but I already own those systems and I'm not going to pay $150-200 or whatever just to play them again. I'll just pick them up for a couple bucks each at a pawn shop, kthx.
And the lack of HDTV support is absolutely moronic. The question isn't where games are now, it's where they'll be in 4-5 years when HD is much more of a standard (in America, anyway).
I just don't get what Nintendo is doing here.
And for anyone who says "wait for Spaceworld" I've been told that before. Nintendo is pretty adept at saying "wait a little while longer and we'll have something REALLY awesome!" and then totally failing to live up to their own hype.
Besides, who would steal their "innovations"? The other two systems are far too far into production to allow for some great change. Nintendo is covering their asses at this point.

Laydock, I am a die hard Nintendo fan, they are my favorite developer of all time. But even the most hardcore fanboys have gotta be underwhelmed by this press conference. The conference was just some DS demos, Nintendogs and the unveiling of the GB Micro. They showed the Revolution's case, cool. It's a nice looking system but I wanna see at least a tiny taste of what it can do, considering it's just a year till it is released it's not too much to ask. At least we have some 360 footage and a bit of PS3 shots ya know? Maybe it's a little too early to show the Rev's controller (assuming it has anything Sony and MS actually want to steal)Super Laydock wrote:^^ Get a grip of yourself Dylan!![]()

EDIT: I will add though, the news of free online, online Mario Kart and Animal Crossing is all excellent. Now we just need SSB online.
Iwata said, during the conference, that he was pushing for an SSB Online for the Revolution's launch...
Yeah, the Revolution looks really nice. I like the design more than the other two next gens, and I'm a little more excited about it than the PS3 (360 doesn't really impress me at all). Heheh, we have a concave console, a convex console, and one that's neither. Funny.
Old games is good in my book, though I don't like the idea of having to buy games I already own (which means I simply just won't buy the ones I already own, so no big deal). It'll probably be limited to first party games and big-name third party developers, though.
So there's going to be another Spaceworld? Awesome!
Personally, though, I hope that Sony isn't inflating (so to speak) the PS3's capabilities like they did the PS2. It doesn't look like it so far, but... but the PS3 isn't the topic here, so nevermind.
I hope that the super-backwards compatibility announcement is a sign that the Revolution will have, for the most part, a normally functional control with something new as opposed to a totally new and odd type of controller. The thing does have ports for GC controllers for obvious reasons, I hope we're not to be expected to play the older games with the GC pad instead of the Revo's standard controller. Only time will tell.

Exactly, Nintendo's press conference was by far the most lacking and dissapointing. Nintendo's excuse about copying is a very poor one, IMO. If someone is determined to copy a controller or game design (as many did, for example with Mario 64), then all Nintendo is doing is postponing the inevitable-and giving both Microsoft and Sony a major edge-up in the meantime.Dylan1CC wrote:Laydock, I am a die hard Nintendo fan, they are my favorite developer of all time. However, as to the complaint that the Revolution doesn't feature HDTV compatibility; who cares?! So what if this technology will be standard in 5 or 6 years; the fact is that it ISN'T standard now, and it's expensive as hell. And with PS3 games, it's already been demonstrated that you're not even going to see all of the game unless you have 2 HDTV monitors-who has the money to shell out for all that?!

Nintendo does deserves at least some credit for not practically forcing people to purchase an HDTV. OK, perhaps forcing is a little strong, but how good are PS3 and XBOX 360 games going to look and sound without it?

I do, as an HDTV owner.dave4shmups wrote:However, as to the complaint that it doesn't feature HDTV compatibility; who cares?!

What? No it hasn't. It's an option that I seriously doubt anyone will ever use, and it is in absolutely no way required. The only time I can see it being used is for multiplayer games, where if you have 2 TVs you can use that option instead of split-screen. But it's never been said that it's required, and I'll bet money that no more than 10 games will support it, and none will require it.And with PS3 games, it's already been demonstrated that you're not even going to see all of the game unless you have 2 HDTV monitors
As good as Revolution games, so I don't see the problem.OK, perhaps forcing is a little strong, but how good are PS3 and XBOX 360 games going to look without it?

Thing is, in America HDTV is becoming the standard. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both coming, HDTVs are falling in price, and there's a significant push to get rid of SDTV. Not supporting it might mean nothing now, but in a couple years it will mean a hell of a lot. And unless Nintendo plans for this system to have a shelf life of two years, they need to think about the future, especially when both competitors are offering it.
