I just can't forgive myself.

here's a link to a fan-remix.
takes about a minute-thirty to get the main chorus cranking.

Yeah, I can't forgive myself either. When I finally got that tune on CD I couldn't stop listening to it for hours, really good.

Apidya

I won't say it again

Except Apidya, I'd say R-Type 2 on Amiga.

And while not a shmup, the most memorable level 1 theme ever is from Turrican 2.
I second that. And X-Out on C64, very military, serious sounding stuff.
And while you mentioned Turrican 2, how's about the intro piece on the Amiga verion? Surely one of the greatest pieces of video game music ever.
Turrican 2 has the greatest soundtrack in any videogame period. :D

Yeah. I still play my Mega Turrican (Gen) every once in a while just to hear those sicc ass beats. 8)

Hmm, maybe it's just a matter of taste...but I find gaiares's stage 1 music to be totally generic and forgettable...on the other hand, stage 3's music is quite awesome.....

Axelay - All level themes are perfectly suited with their levels, but the 1st level theme is just perfect. But I too prefer the music in stage 2.
Apidya - 1st level theme Fits very well with the plant stage. Chris Huelsbeck at his best. Hands down!
Gaiares - I couldn't think of a better tune for the blast-off from space-station
Gradius III - Very cheerful theme.
Gynoug/Wings of Wor - Makes you feel you're on your way to victory
Ikaruga - Very Dramatic/Epic theme. Gets you directly into the shape of things to come. Somehow you can tell from that song, that you're fighting against all odds but you're going to die in the end.
Psyvariar II - Awesome
R-Type II (AMIGA) this is even better than the arcade version. Nuff said...
Raiden I - I still hum this song ever once in a while when I'm sad. The Bass of the explosions are so cool. The 2nd level theme is also great.
Raiden II - Same as above.
RayForce - Makes you feel free.
Sol Feace - very well suited space theme
Thunder Force III - the plant stage music
Thunder Force V - Water Level

The coolest 1st level theme in a non shmup is Turrican 2.

Super R-Type (SNES, Level 3)
Ikaruga ( I love John Williams-esque, orchestral soundtracks)
Giga Wing 2 (same as above, I'm a sucker for classical soundtracks)
Star Fox (the ending theme when it shows the boss data is freaking sweet)
DoDonPachi (The rock music just makes you wanna blow stuff up)

I'd have to say Espgaluda and Ikaruga. Their dramatic first-level music alone embodies the epic feel of the rest of the game, and whenever i think of those games, i immediately remember the surge of emotion i felt when hearing the music for the first time.

on a related note, I fall asleep every night to either the Ikaruga OST or the Do DonPachi & Espgaluda remix album. ^_^

DoDonPachi: dai-ou-jou. Makes me want to go to Japan or the Philippines.

As I said before on the old forums, The BGM from Thunder Force V's first stage "Legendary Wings" (assuming your order is 1-2-3, or 1-3-2), should be on alarm clocks.

Gigawing Generations' theme for "ISLAND" is really energetic especially around the end. It also fits the stage pretty well.

I'll admit, the game isn't that great, and the stage isn't that heart-pumping, but Night Raid's "Morinos" BGM was pretty good. I headbanged to it a few times :x

Part of what made Ikaruga's themes so great is that the music synced with what was going on in the game. The theme for the first stage starts the second you take off, and REALLY starts when you blast off into the fray.

Soukyugurentai's first level BGM was also pretty well-done, although the stage's Boss Theme sort of dwarfs it.

Cho Ren Sha 68K...well damn that goes without saying dosen't it. :P

Thanks :) And yeah, I did.. Photoshop 6.0 (gotta love 3-D Transform), animated with Adobe Imageready 3.0. The inspiration came from the ridiculously long grips of the PS3 controllerang, and how it somewhat resembles the wings of the Ikaruga. :? only, it's not aesthetically beautiful like Ikaruga. XD

to get back on-topic, I also loved the first-level music of R-Type. R-Type Final could have put some more effort into it, the only tracks i remember from that game were levels 3 (the obligatory battleship stage 3), 4 & 5, though 5 got on my nerves after a while. a pity, seeing as R-Type's 'grand finale' failed to surpass R-Type Delta. then again, that's like expecting a new-school Final Fantasy game to surpass FF6. :/
