Blast Wind: Ultimate Destroyer
Image

Welcome to the Blast Wind high score thread. Obviously, all scores must be obtained while playing the game on its default settings, and I would appreciate it if scores were posted in the following format:

name - score - stage(if All Clear, list number of lives left) - paths taken

Also, since you can play as the red ship if you plug the controller into port 2, I've added a high score table for the red ship, since it really is a completely different experience (much more challenging).

At any rate, blast away at the Gorn empire and come back to post your scores!!! :D

Defaults are as follows:
Difficulty: Normal
Lives: 3
Extends: 1 million/2 million

Blue Ship:
01. jp - 5,097,890 - ALL (Lx8, NO MISS) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-1/6-1
02. Icarus - 4,748,210 - ALL (Lx7, NO MISS) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-1/6-2
03. The Coop - 4,721,970 - All (Lx7) - No clue
04. CIT - 4,130,400 - ALL (Lx5) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-2/6-2
05. BulletMagnet - 4,080,360 - ALL (Lx2) - 1-2/2-2/3-1/4-2/5-1/6-2
06. RiverRaider - 3,943,880 - All
07. EOJ - 3,707,240 - ALL (Lx0)- 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-1/5-1/6-1
08. Shatterhand - 3,641,640 - ALL (Lx0)
09. Spadgy - 3,519,600 - ALL (Lx2) - 1-2/2-2/3-2/4-2/5-2/6-2
10. DC906270 - 3,467,280 - ALL

Red Ship:
01. jp - 4,274,120 - All Clear (Lx5) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-1/6-2
02. Spadgy - 1,965,810 - Stage 6-2 - 1-2/2-2/3-2/4-2/5-1/6-2
03.
04.

For completion purposes, here's my last post in the other thread:
I AM the Ultimate Destroyer.

jp - 4,920,560 - All(x8) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-1/6-1

Yes. 8 lives. No miss. And I even took on the wall crawler midboss in level 6 (who is worth a whopping 100K). I've got a picture on my phone, so as soon as that hits my email I'll post it.

Also, I don't know why, but somewhere in 2-1 there's an extra 200K apparently. Which is really weird given the amount of bonus points in 2-2. Haha, I was about to go CRAZY trying to figure out how Icarus got that much higher than 4.5 mill (which I always figured was about the max), and apparently there's 200K tucked away in 2-1 somewhere. That, and the boat load of coins.

Speaking of coins, by my estimates after every 50 you collect a 1UP drops. I managed to get 4 1UP drops this go round (1 in Stage 3, 2 in Stage 4, and 1 final one in Stage 6, though I think you pretty much HAVE to take route 6-1 to accumulate enough coinage). I don't think its possible to get 5 1UP drops though... since if you do the coin collecting VERY WELL... like... MASTERFULLY, you BARELY get that extra 1UP in Stage 6. I don't know, maybe if you lucked up and got a "coin rain" in every single one of the random boxes you could pull it off, but even then you'd have to do some hardcore scrambling in Stage 4.

Anyways, now I'm off to red ship land. Because as cool as 1LCing with 8 lives with the blue ship is... doing the same with the red ship would just be hardcore.

Also, anyone else try this on Very Hard? At first it doesn't seem like much changed... but once you hit Ostragle then game becomes a VERY brutal beast VERY quickly (yeah, you know those little laser sattelites? Imagine if they shoot at you CONSTANTLY in a steady stream).

I take it you mean if you fight the complete Ostragle ship in 4-2? (I notice that if you choose 4-1, you "only" fight the bridge module) If you take 4-1, how does Ostragle get brutal there?

I don't know about the fight on 4-1, but on 4-2 the laser cannons rain down lasers CONSTANTLY. Its pretty nasty.

jp, when you say "paths taken", you're referring to whether or not I've hit that switch button in order to change the course of the level, correct?

Yessir.

If you hit it then you took path 2. If not, you took path 1.

CIT - 4,130,400 - ALL (Lx5) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-2/6-2

Blue ship obviously.

EDIT: You might also wanna change TWE into EOJ as he changed his name.

EDIT2: Why's everybody hating on the Gorn Empire in this game. Their HQ looks so lovely with all the flowers bloming and white horses. Seems a waste to blow it all to bits.

EDIT3: I love the final boss' appearance, with all the people running into the huge Battleship. Maybe the most dramatic boss entry in a shmup I've seen.

In comparison to the blue ship, the red ship is extremely underpowered. I HAVE made 1CC runs with it, but the scores were ABYSMAL.

But, the red ship IS the remedy to the whole "OMG THIS GAME IS TOO EASY!" complaint, since really, its not that the red ship sucks, its just that the blue ship is EXTREMELY overpowered.

Bah, I went back to get a Red Ship score:

jp - 4,274,120 - All Clear (Lx5) - 1-2/2-1/3-1/4-2/5-1/6-2

I 1LC'd it to Stage 6... once in stage 6 I had a hard time debating whether or not to take 6-1 and get the 100,000 from the midboss, or to just play it safe and stick with 6-2. If not for the final boss getting TWO lucky shots off, I would have had a 1LC.

Now, how 'bout some competition in that Red Ship category guys!? :D

Edit:
Upon looking back at the scores in my game, I already had a red ship high score. It was 4.3xx.xxx. I don't remember any of the info though, so I won't post it. But it was interesting to see two red ships in my top 10. 8)

And actually, if I had 1LC'd it just now, I would have had a red ship in my top 5. :o

I'm about to cry.

24,150 points away from breaking 5 million. I am not kidding, I feel like I'm about to cry. I was shaking when I hit the final boss with a 3mill+ score, 8 lives, and 5 bombs. SHAKING! When I beat him... I was like, "Man, I've got this!!!! Its over!!!! I have finally achieved my life goal to break 5 million in Blast Wind! "

And now... wow... I just... wow.

*goes off to be alone for awhile*

Right - I only played this for the first time ever just and hour or so ago, but I like it. I'm certainly planning on pursuing this further, so here's a really puny score just to get started...

Spadgy - 1,473,550 - 5-2

Realise now I don't quite know the game well enough to know the route I took, but I'll be more vigilant in my next score submission post!

Thanks JP! I noticed you're quite a fan of this game.

Well - I got an hour in after work today, with a slight improvement...

spadgy - 2,180,550 - stage 6-2 - 1-2/2-2/3-2/4-2/5-2/6-2

Am I right that if you hit the switch that's route 2, while leaving it is route 1?

Loving the simple, pure gameplay of this one!

Yup, if you hit the button its path x-2. If not, x-1. :)

And nice work! You'll have this 1CC'd in no time man! :)

Yes - got the 1'CC (my second new one in a week!)

Spadgy - 3,519,600 - ALL (Lx2) - 1-2/2-2/3-2/4-2/5-2/6-2

Jp - thanks to your enthusiasm for this game and your review I saw somewhere, I got into this game. It was you recommending it despite it's detractors that made me stump up the cash - so thank you!

Now to see if I can pull myself away from Star Soldier R long enough to learn the other routes and up that score!

And I'm definitely going to give Red Ship a go...

EDIT - pic to follow, once I charge the camera!

Awesome job man! Congrats on the 1CC! :)

Also, very happy to hear that my review of Blast Wind helps people look over the bad mouthing in generally gets from certain folks around here. No matter what I think Blast Wind is the absolute best "chill" shmup out there. Great music, great levels, great bosses, and great gameplay, what more could you ask for? :D

And I'm sure you'll be moving up the high score list in no time. Definitely look forward to more scores from ya man!

'Chill Shmup' is a great way of putting it. I love my tough shmups, but it's so nice sometimes just to play a game where you can just kick back and feel like a space ace on top of his game!

I had assumed the red ship was a novelty maybe, but I just had a few goes and it's amazing. After a while, my first vaguely worthy score:

Red Ship:
Spadgy - 1,965,810 - Stage 6-2 - 1-2/2-2/3-2/4-2/5-1/6-2

Starting again with a totally different ship is amazing fun. Changes the game. I discovered route 5-1 on this go to, and made it through in without dying - points all over the place there. Not enough for that so-close extend though. Only just got to the route switch.

I like the way the ship is underpowered in one sense and better in another. Gives you lots more bullet dodging to do to.

Hurray!!! Another red ship score! :D

Damn good run for your first time with it (hell, especially since you haven't been playing Blast Wind that long) too.

And yeah, the red ship definitely adds a lot of challenge to the game. But I agree, it is a lot of fun and virtually makes a completely different game out of Blast Wind.

Wow. Hang on - so you'd never seen this before (I certainly haven't in my brief flirtations with this game)? That means, if you can work out how to trigger it, that you could really bump up that score yes? Do left over lives add to your score?

I think so.

The shield pod turns into a coin when destroyed, I guess you had 99 coins by then and it became a 1UP :P
