Is Blue Ray finalsied though?
Will the PS3 be affected by the possible Toshiba-Sony deal?

Just wanted to note on the size comparison pciture neorichie posted of the two systems side by side. For those that don't know, the 360 is actually very small even though it looks like a computer tower. The new Time magazine has a picture of Gates holding it in his left hand. The PS3 will just be a lot smaller, maybe not too much bigger than the Revolution?
Also, with PS3 launching with MGS4 and 360 with Halo 3 (man, talk about clash of the titans) the ONLY way IMHO that Nintendo can get a decent foothold with the Revolution is if they launch it with a new Mario and a new Metroid. It's too late now for Zelda GC which should have been saved for the Rev's launch. If the Rev's launch is even remotely like the Cube's, it will kill Nintendo in the home market this time. Having just one 1st party title with second and third rate content for 9 months before any major AAA title will not cut it this time.
Only by having at least two first party blockbusters from their triad will the Rev be successful at launch. Unfortunately Iwata has neither the common sense nor the foresight to see this. Even though Echoes didn't sell too well, I think having a new Mario adventure coupled with the more adult Metroid would help combat the mass appeal of MGS and Halo just enough so Nintend would at least have a decent chance of being second this time.
Nintendo has confirmed Mario will be at launch for Rev but no matter how popular Mario is or even if the game is more in tune with its old school roots, there is no way Mario alone will be able to fight with Halo and MGS. Since Nintendo refuses to make their own new mature franchise they could at least give Mario an assist from the boys at Retro. [/i]

Dylan1CC, where did you read MGS4 is a lauch ps3 title? seems quite unlikely...
And, MGS might have lost some of its "mass appeal", as 3 did not fare well in the USA, to the point that Kojima said in an interview "maybe the next one will not even marketed in the US".
However, I agree with you. Nintendo must have some ace in its sleeves this time.

Man, that batarang joypad sucks so big. I hope it's a prototype.

That new controller is really awful...half of the thing is "dead space," with nothing useful on it...don't they realize that people are going to hold their hands close to the buttons, and that those long "prongs" are just going to get in the way?
Btw, Zweihander, that "Ikaruga" GIF would make a kickin' avatar.

heh, done and done. i considered it but felt it might be confused to actually supporting Sony's crackheaded decision. but you're right, the punchline is obvious. thanks for the advice, BulletMagnet ^^BulletMagnet wrote:Btw, Zweihander, that "Ikaruga" GIF would make a kickin' avatar.
btw, my name is that of a game that Squenix needs to make, once they realize their FMA and Drakengard games suck the big phallus.

the console in itself doesn't look that bad though. if it's as small as someone said, it will be ok.
anyway from what i read it has a lot of RAM and VRAM so it should be good for 2D. some people were worrying that PS2 would have a hard time handling ultra-mode of mushihime, that would solve the problem for a long time. maybe the gwg port would have been better on PS3, if only because a brute force approach would have been enough.
of course it will be mostly used for madden shit, but look at the PS2, it has an arguably better 2D library than the DC. of course most of the time the reason why a shmup will be ported to PS3 instead of PS2 it will be forced obsolescence but still.

I read it on one of the news sites, maybe it was wrong and has been debunked by now.Turrican wrote:Dylan1CC, where did you read MGS4 is a lauch ps3 title? seems quite unlikely...

Oh yeah and Kojima is an arse. He goes from "Wow, MGS1 did so well in the U.S. we will release MGS2 first there" to "MG3 didn't sell as well as the last two, maybe I won't toss the Gaijin a bone next time." Hey ya know, Metroid Prime sold like gangbusters 3 years ago but Echoes got eaten by Halo 2. The market is changing Kojima and Sony isn't the Death Star it once was, suck that gut in and take it like a man.
But hey, I haven't played MG3 beyond the demo, what do I know.

Halo 3 will launch on Xbox 360 on the day that PS3 launches in America - Bill Gates has confirmed this. Pretty pointless really, if you ask me.
As for MGS4 on PS3 launch, I'd say no, seeing as no shots at E3.
Oh and has anyone seen the hi-res Quicktime Killzone trailer on IGN? OMG (if it's real).

Forgive my ignorance, but I remember reading some time ago that the PS-3 was suppose to be miles ahead of the X-Box as far as hardware specs go. But judging by the specs posted, the X-Box has three 3.2GHZ CPU cores, where as the PS-3 only has one(Not clear). PS-3 has 512KB L2 cache where as XBOX 360 has 1MB. PS-3 has 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz & 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz, where as the XBOX has 512 MB of 700 MHz GDDR3 RAM Unified memory architecture. The PS-3 has slightly faster nvidia GPU RSX @550MHz comapred to the xbox -ATI 500 MHZ GPU.(by the way whats that 10 MB embedded DRAM)?
So judging by the specs, they're very close, but the PS-3 has System Floating Point Performance of 2 TFLOPS where as the XBOX only 1 TFLOP. So the PS-3 is supposed to be more power.
PS-3 Specs:
CPU: Cell Processor

System Bandwidth
* Main RAM: 25.6GB/s
* VRAM: 22.4GB/s
* RSX: 20GB/s (write) + 15GB/s(read)
* SB: 2.5GB/s (write) + 2.5GB/s (read)

-2 hardware threads per core
-1 VMX-128 vector unit per core
-1 MB L2 cache
CPU Game Math Performance
-9 billion dots per second
Custom ATI Graphics Processor
-500 MHz
-10 MB embedded DRAM
-48-way parallel floating-point shader pipelines
-unified shader architecture
Memory
-512 MB GDDR3 RAM
-700 MHz DDR
Memory Bandwidth
-22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth
-256 GB/s memory bandwidth to EDRAM
-21.6 GB/s frontside bus

That controller looks like a stretched-out Logitech Wingman or something. Not sure about that one...
I, for one, actually like the PSX pads quite a lot. I'd even go so far as to say they're my favorite game pad. Yeah, all you Saturn pad lovers can flame me, but being that I don't have a good Saturn pad yet (only the original crappy pad that came w/ the US Saturn originally), I'll have to stick w/ the PSX pad. I find the D-Pad to be better than most people give it credit for, and I believe the PSX analog sticks are the best out there. I also like the fact that it has more buttons than any other game system controller, allowing for complex control schemes when necessary.
I don't think the new system looks that bad, but what does it matter? If the games are good, we'll play. If they suck, we won't.

In terms of raw processing power, the PS3 is twice as powerful as the Xbox 360.

Absolutely. The Dual Shock is a work of art, the most excellent pad out there. Sony ditching it, whatever the reason may be, is a crime against humanity.FRO wrote:I, for one, actually like the PSX pads quite a lot. I'd even go so far as to say they're my favorite game pad. Look, my opinion could be biased, I admit.
I happen to be a huge MGS fan. And snake's most trustworthy piece of equipment is Dual Shock. You just can't have snake without. Try playing Twin Snakes and see the hell of getting dog tags without pressure sensitive buttons. Or ask on any mgs board what do they think of Substance Xbox.
Sure, the digi cross on the Dual Shock isn't the best one. The Snes one was better. Then again, no other digi cross recently is good: DS, NGC, DC... they're all terrible.
(NGC Hori pad is great though)

Taken from madmanjock of neo-geo.com:
"Now of course games come first, but I would like to point out all this talk of the Playstation 3 being technologically superior as so far being unfounded.
First up the PS3 specs:
CPU: Cell Processor PowerPC-base core @3.2GHz; 1 VMX vector unit; 512KB L2 cache
GPU: RSX @550MHz, 256mb Vram
Memory: 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz;
System Bandwidth: Main RAM 25.6GB/s; VRAM 22.4GB/s; RSX 20GB/s (write) + 15GB/s (read); SB 2.5GB/s (write) + 2.5GB/s (read)
Now Xbox 360 specs:
PowerPC-based CPU 3.2 GHz (x3), VMX-128 vector unit per core; three total, 1 MB L2 cache
GPU: 500MHz processor ATI 10 mb Vram.
Memory:
512 MB of GDDR3 RAM
Unified memory architecture
Memory Bandwidth:
22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth
256 GB/s memory bandwidth to EDRAM
21.6 GB/s front-side bus
Some things to notice:
CPU: Cell looks to be a powerful beast, but nobody has seen any real world performance out of them yet. The Xbox360 CPU is based very closey to the G5 processors used in macs, which needs no introduction in what it can do. They both come in at the same clock speed, but what is interesting to notice is that the X360 has double the L2 cache amount of the PS3. This makes a big difference to games. (This is what separates the performance between Celerons and Pentium 4's to those less technical, the L2 cache size). Also the X360 is said to have 3 of these processors running at once, as far as I'm aware the PS3 only has the one Cell in it. Winner on this front? Maybe too early to tell as the Cell hasn't been tested out, but on paper at least it's the X360.
GPU: Yup that must be confusing quite alot. The PS3 GPU runs at 550mhz, was built by Nvidia and has 256mb Vram. Nice. The X360 has a ATI card runs a bit slower at 500mhz but only has 10mb Vram. The 10mb doesn't mean all textures on x360 are going to look like utter shit, it means it has to use system ram (of which it has 512mb) as video ram. This is slower, but I would (bloody hope) expect some way of doing this which is much faster than what we see in PC's has been developed. The winner here is still the PS3, but I'm just trying to make people understand that the 256 vs 10 number isn't as bad as it may sound.
RAM: PS3 has 256mb of it, 360 512mb. (temped to say "the end"). PS3 has slightly faster ram, but only having half the amount of the X360 is a bottleneck. You can take into account however that if the Xbox had 256mb or textures to deal with, this would come from the system ram lowering the amount available to 256 the same as PS3. However, at least in current games this isn't going to happen too often (many games are happy with just 64mb video ram, but some next gen games like Doom 3 basically love as much as you can chuck at it). The X360 is the winner here IMO, but you can argue what you like.
In conclusion, I don't think the naked eye is really going to notice a difference between games running on the PS3 and X360 platforms. Anything that "looks better" on PS3 than what have so far been seen on X360 will be because as Sony is currently market leader developers will be more focused on making material for it. I ignored the fact the PS3 has Blue-Ray DVD and X360 just standard DVD in this post, basically because I think Blue Ray will become a dead standard. But we will see."
