I recently got this off Japanese Yahoo, and while the board works fine - instead of the brutal difficulty I've always loved Ghouls 'n' Ghosts for, the version I have seems to just put me back to pretty much the spot I die, and let me continue from there
The one I have is the World revision, but I used to play this same version in FBA...and even playing around with the dip switches, I can't recreate the mode my PCB must be in, or work out how to change it
Is this easily fixable? Or is this something that might require ROMs being burnt and swapped? Any help much appreciated - as even though this mode makes the game easier to progress in (and I really suck!), it just doesn't feel like Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
I believe it's only 1 or 2 Eproms you need to replace ("burn & swap" it doesn't get any easier than that), considering it is an original Capcom PCB you have.
That said, I really am totally hopeless with all this stuff Is there anywhere that you could reccommend for me to send it to, to get the Eprom/s burnt and swapped? Or would you even be prepared to do it, if I payed? haha my knowledge of arcade boards pretty much only extends as far as adjusting volume knobs
the 4 Eproms in the lower right corner of your photo would need to be replaced: no. 27, 28, 29, 30
Do you have MAME installed ? you should check first if your version differs from the known MAME versions. Let me know if it does, and if you would feel happy with one of them running on your board.
Problem is, I've never been able to get Mame working on my laptop I have no idea why...so I use Final Burn Alpha, instead - though that's only compatible with one Ghouls 'n' Ghosts rom (which for the record) plays how I want it to Is that any use?

Your board looks like it's US version, not World. Two reasons: it has an AAMA protect sticker, and the label stamps on the EPROMs match the US version "DMU" (World version EPROMs say "GHL")
Must have been misinformed - was sold as a World version, but as long as they can be swapped to World Eproms, then I'll be more than happy
Who, or where should I go to get the Eproms burnt? Would happily send it to someone, really, as I don't want to damage the board by attempting it myself. I know that probably sounds crazy, but I'm really not the best with these things
I believe there are more than the 3 MAME versions existing. The US version in Mame was dumped from my own board, and it behaves differently from the version Grinning Cat describes.
VSA can burn the eproms. would cost you 30 bucks + shipping

Wow, $30 plus shipping? I bought an EPROM burner for $42 shipped :) But only 32 pins maximum, and granted it seems pretty difficult and not so cheap to actually source the EPROMs.
Haven't tried doing any CPS-1 stuff though. I don't have one with a good C-board for conversions.
you can even build an eprom reader for 5$. that's not the point. the point is that in my country 1 hour costs more than 100$. removing the stickers, cleaning the eproms surfaces, UV erasing the programs, checking all 4 if they clean (if not, back into the UV tank and same procedure again), burning 4 eproms, checking if written corrently ...
do you have an idea now, how far we get here with 30$ oder even less ?

The US romset does let you continue from the point you die (or very close to it), unlike the World and JPN romsets where you restart from the beginning or mid level.
I seem to read DMU on the eprom stickers in the pic posted by Grinning Cat which would in fact be a US board.
The US Ghouls is a super easy version (more armours, bosses taking less shots, etc.) that no serious GNG player would want to play. Switch to Daimakimura asap.
I see what you guys mean. compared US and World version in MAME. There are indeed more spawn points in the US version. But you definitely don't continue right from the place you died.
Whoa whoa, sorry I didn't mean to offend, Mr.The Sheep. You've done great service to the community. I only made my post because I recently had need to have a few EPROMs programmed, and found it more economical to pay the overhead of getting my own programmer and UV tube. It ended up being a lot more than $30, but in the future the rest is free.
You could say time is a cost, but erasing, programming, and verifying is something I can do in an evening, whereas shipping could take days or weeks. Then I'd still be screwed if I gave the wrong ROMs to the programming service.
Anyway, I will bow out since it's off-topic. Apologies again.
You're right . If he can get an eprom programmer, capable of burning these types of eproms, for 50-100$, it would be indeed more interesting for him if he would do so. For a PCB collector, it is a must have tool anyway

I'm slightly confused How do I get in touch with VSA? Or do you mean you'd be able to do it at that price?
Whatever the case, I'd have no problem paying someone $30 to sort this I know, it would probably be more cost effective (long-term) to learn how to do things like this myself...but to be honest, I'd rather start out experimenting on a slightly cheaper board first, than worry about ruining this one!
good thread, I have the US version as well and wouldnt mind getting these burned off either....especially if it can easily be reverted back if desired later down the road.
The game will still display in english though if it is World version yes?
cool thanks! Same as grinning cat I have never really messed extensively with MAME on my laptop. Without a doubt though my version is waaay easier then I remember from when I played it as a youngster in the arcades. Unicorn only only takes a handful of shots before dying in shame....
It's better when you send your inquiry to my email adress there: christian.jenni@vsa-ag.ch
I will instruct our technician to burn the chips correctly. Furthermore my boss would ask for a way higher price if you would contact him over the main adress. 30$ is kind of a special price I am offering to people I know

Cheers Sheep - you're a legend! Will drop you an e-mail a bit later on
