Yeah they weren't too shabby. I still think the battle with The End from MGS3 is a series standout.
One minor nitpick for MGS4 are the flashbacks. The images are cool and all and I can appreciate the concept but I want to take time and look at the individal images and thats not possible when your jamming the X button. Not to mention the stuff you missing from the actual cutscene going on when viewing the flashbacks.
Of course all of this wouldn't mean shit if they bothered to include an image gallery and movie theatre. Damn you Konami!

I like the flashback thing, the interactivity with the cutscenes is a big plus.
I thought the Solidus fight in MGS2 was one of the worst final battles ever, especially as this guy comes out of nowhere, no real background, and then proceeds to annoy the shit out of you in one of the most tedious finale's ever.
MGS4 Update:
Finished ACT4! :WARNING: NO REAL SPOILERS, BUT AVOID IF YOU'RE TOUCHY, THEY MAY BE SPOILERS FOR YOU!
Thoughts:
Hmm, this started as one of the best things ever for me, but the last half of the act (battles and cutscenes) were really starting to grate. A shame, I think even more could have been done in this act - Kojima was onto a good thing.
The cutscenes here were the worst so far - not in look or anything, just that damn sentimental baloney that Kojima can't help spewing at the most innapropriate times. And Otacon turned from a teary bastard back to a resolute 'man with a job' faster than Anakin fell to the dark side.
Of all things they resurrected that sodding MGS2 dialogue between Raiden and his bird, the one I quoted eariler and cited as one of the most inane and worst pieces of script ever! Lolz!
Oh well, just a dent in an otherwise lovely game, still looking forward to Act 5 now, and praying Kojima holds it together.

I thought this might amuse you. Since the server move we've been using nearly twice the bandwidth we normally would. This seemed strange, very strange in fact. So I spent the past five HOURS looking through logs, trying to work out what the hell was wrong, and ... what do I find. Along with the Garegga topic which usually accounts for most of the bandwidth, this topic has nearly DOUBLED the amount we use per day. Most of the hits are from guests (search engine hits).
Nice one guys
Lucky we're not paying per byte or I'd be a bit upset. I just wish you'd posted it 2 days later so it wouldn't have looked so much like a server swap issue..

The Snowy bit you're probably referring to (mid-level) was super cool. It was everything after that I felt lost its wind a bit.

We are the cream of the crop among the gaming elite; I suppose the entire internet is dying to hear more about our Metal Gear debates.

You're trying too hard now... The battle of the top of the Federal Hall is the second best fight in the whole series, just below of The End. The setting is the most awesome, And Solidus has plenty of charisma and background.I thought the Solidus fight in MGS2 was one of the worst final battles ever, especially as this guy comes out of nowhere, no real background, and then proceeds to annoy the shit out of you in one of the most tedious finale's ever.
I'm not trying hard enough - I genuinely thought it was totally rubbish. It may have been that by that point I was so bored stiff by the game that it had no impact, but I really remember it being cagey, frustrating, and lacklustre.Turrican wrote:You're trying too hard now... I can think of a ton of MGS boss fights that were more entertaining (in fact, most of them spring to mind.)

Yeah well... On a gameplay level, I can think to them too. There are battles which are supposed to entertain, and others which are supposed to be epic. Fighting Psycho Mantis on a gameplay level is incredibly enjoyable - you have lots of ways to take him down. On the other hand, fighting Liquid on the top of the Rex is incredibly limited gameplay-wise. You barely have a set of punches to beat him.Skykid wrote:Turrican wrote:I'm not trying hard enough - I genuinely thought it was totally rubbish. Does this mean that that Liquid fight wasn't accomplished? I don't think so because the whole idea of that fight is to be epic. Raiden vs Solidus is that kind of battle - you may have more fun tracking down The End, or solving The Sorrow's riddle, but arguably you won't get more epic than that. Since you couldn't stand those cunts, the epic factor didn't trigger I guess.
Or it's just not a very good game.
Ah...look. It's ok. Just 'ok'. Passable. It's really flawed, but if you like it, that's great.
There are lots of better games than MGS2, but if it won you over, I'm glad you got more from the experience than me.

Strider you sound like you're preaching to the converted there: "nothing we say or do will make him change that."
But the 'we' is mis-guided. If you take a look at the general tone of the thread toward this game, you'll find most people have agreed to cite the same flaws and problems with it that I have. In fact, only yourself and Turrican appear to find the game a cut above.
Which would mean instead it's down to me to say:
Turrican loves MGS2... just let him love it. NOTHING we say or do will change that.
That makes a little more sense.

I guess but if you want to use that logic I'll just use the sale numbers to say your in the minority (and i don't think sales says what a good game is all the time either). The internet hates on stuff more than likes... you never see most folks bother to post alot of nice things to say about a game.
It's cool if you don't want to like the game but I think there are ALOT of folks in the world who like it, over hating it. I mean I can see why someone wouldn't like MG games in general... it sounds like you don't really like the games all that much except for 1 and that's ok. All I meant was that this "I hate MG2... no I love MG2" thing has had it's due, we know all ready and know who stands where.
But maybe the CV Fighter thread will form enough mass and cause its' self to collapse in a vortex of hatred and all copies of Metal Gear 2 along with it.

I do to but there are folks on this forum, and alot of them, that HATE that game and claim it ruined the series and it blows my mind. I see more posts on here about how they hate that game versus ones that say they like it. But that's just about anything these days now.Gradius 5 is absolutely blindingly good.

Aw, you guys, knock it off, willya?
Just to throw my two cents in, I think the issue here is that many people who aren't huge MGS2 fans feel that the game comes really really close to being astoundingly good, but falls tragically short - hence the controversy. That's how I feel about it, anyway.

Don't worry it290, it's just a debate - nobody is at each others throats!
You use a lot of interesting phrases regarding my idea's about MGS2, one of which is 'hating' on a game.
I don't 'hate' on anything, I just try to play the game and have an informed opinion based on my history of playing games, and games in the same series.
I'm not here to 'hate' on MGS2, but I do find it incredibly disappointing. beyond the opening credits sequence (absolutely mind bogglingly well done) and the entire tanker section of the game (absolutely brilliantly well-made) is a bland game, in a bland location (especially compared to shadow moses island), with a poor main character and some insufferable dialogue. There are moments, although few, which hint at some good stuff, with the dead cell characters being fairly interesting and interesting to fight - but on the whole we all need to accept that a game is only as great as the sum of its parts.
Yes, I love MGS1, and I'm nearly 100% sold on MGS4. My review went to print yesterday and I as we don't do 8.5's, it got lucky and went out with a nine out of ten. I'm a strict, strict bastard when it comes to scoring, so that's a whopping result (and the first nine I've given since I began for the publication.)
What I'm getting at is that I'm not an internet hater who trolls forums to preach against MGS2, I just don't think it's a very good game.
As you mentioned, game sales mean nil for a release like this.
Final Fantasy VII, also overrated: most returned game in retail history.

I see where your coming from but I liked the game. You said you didn't like 3 though and next to 4 it is by far my next favorite. If part one was redone gameplay wise and visuals that matched 3 then I'd have to sit and think quite hard about it. I love one but the gameplay for me... it gives me far less to work with.
But the story in 3 was soooo good and I loved the game.
My only gripe about your stance is that you are coming across a bit like you don't see how I could like part 2 and that anyone that does is wrong in liking and thinking it's a good game. Some of this boils to opinion.

You say you don't want to pass as some hater troll, but you surely seem biased. So to sum your opinion, you enjoyed Snatcher, Policenauts, MGS1, MGS4... And in the middle of that Kojima hit his head on a pole and suddenly made a really flawed game. Yaay for coherence...Skykid wrote:Or it's just not a very good game.

I thought i'd chime in on MGS2, since I played through it lately. Good GAME, but the other stuff is extremely flawed. I think the story is garbage. I mean, it's just ridiculous. Some stand out moments would be the dude missing the leg, but he's just faking it, and well, I don't want to give to much away, but "HELLO BROTHER!". I felt like I was watching those two twins from GI Joe for a minute.Strider77 wrote:This is getting to the point where it's in the eye of the beholder you guys. Also, just about everybody other than Snake sucked. The bosses were the worst in the series. And the less said about Raiden the better. Actually, let's talk about Raiden for a minute. His conversations with his girlfriend were some of the most drop dead funny things I have seen, since Batman gave a thumb-up from the Bat Wing in Forever.
Thankfully you can skip all cinemas. But the codecs are the biggest pain. You can fast forward them, but not really skip them. And they are insanely plentiful, useless, and boring as all get out. If this were a film, i'd give it D.
But the game itself is quite good, but there aren't enough locales to go to. But it's fun.
MGS3 was a step up in all categories though. Too bad it didn't sell anywhere as much. However, the excess is still there a bit. How many times do I have to see Ocelot spin his fucking guns? Good lord...it just went on and on and on...
I was pretty psyched about MGS4, but I hear that they went nuts again with the cinemas...even more so actually. What about the codec calls? Those are worse? Are they back and bad as ever?
