I notice this game has actually gotten mostly GOOD reviews from magazines and such after it's release here in the US.

Gee, what a concept, a good game getting a good review.....

.....of course, the reviewers never mention most of the things that a shmup fan would want to know, like anything about the scoring system or something.... they seem to mention just "colors = powerups" and "cool graphics and music that forms as you play".

I, personally, am just sticking with the Japanese DS copy of this that I already have.

Online sounds interesting, but Im not really gonna bother with that..... I hate friend codes enough that I just plain do not use them unless I absolutely have to (even with something like Brawl), and Nintendo's online......anything..... is always incredibly....... sad.

It surprises me.... sorta.... to hear that the PSP version actually has slowdown.

I mean..... it may be cool as heck, it may be hard as heck and spew buckets of attacks at you...... but it's still freaking Space Invaders. It SHOULDNT HAVE SLOWDOWN.

Great game though. Now that it's out here, anyone that has a DS should just go buy it right away.....

I wholeheartedly agree! I made the mistake of purchasing the game yesterday afternoon, but waiting until just before bed to try it out. That "just a quick game before bed" turned into two solid hours of shooting bliss. I just played and constantly checked my score ranking on the DS Wi-Fi global leaderboards.

In terms of the overall presentation, it really reminded me of Pacman CE on XBL.

Alright, is there any sort of strats I can use on the level 5 boss? Bastard UFO keeps wiping me out, and I generally don't have any lives left by the time I reach it.

Also, whoever was saying the original Space Invaders is terrible a while back has no sense of the strategy of the game. There's specific techniques like the shot counting and the wall of death, and even when to destroy what column to know if you want to get the big scores on that game. It's not just mindlessly blasting monsters.

Honestly, the best strategy is to not die at all before getting there and be ridiculously high level for the fight. If you're that, then you can kill it before it ever shoots a laser off.

Otherwise, good luck dodging those bubbles and then the lasers.

I haven't noticed a lick of slowdown on the PSP version, so I don't know where that came from.

Call me anal but several hundred pixels of blind gap is much more of a problem.

Gameplay should not take place across the two screens in a shooting game. Same goes for Contra 4. It's not a matter of the blind gap. It's just that THE HUMAN EYE CAN'T WATCH BOTH SCREENS AT ONCE. I have to look up at the boss, look back down to make sure I'm not about to slide into a bullet, back and forth back and forth. Especially in parts where you have to break away at him and his weak spot is a small red block, so you can't just fire at him from the corner of your eye. I think this is stupid game design.

Can anyone point to a decent, complete scoring strategy guide for this, yet? Thanks... :)

I disagree totally. I think it works really well for the boss fights. Especially the 4th one.

Has anyone played both the DS and PSP versions? I'm still not sure which to go for.

I have both the PSP and DS versions. The PSP iteration has slightly better graphics and no screen gap to contend with (which can actually make some of the battles harder) but lacks online play, leaderboards, ranking mode, and some of the music/sound effects are different or missing. I'd say go with the DS version.

Aside from the gap, how is this different than playing a game on a vertical monitor?

Thank you so much for posting this! I ordered mine--I wouldn't want to miss out on this, especially since it looks like a high-priced ebay auction will soon be the only place to get one.

Now I have to go buy Space Invaders and Arkanoid...

Just wondering if anyone has pushed 2M+ out of stage 1 (yes I know there's a hi-score thread but there's no stage mode scores).

I fucking hate the invaders that make a beeline towards the bottom of the screen. You know, the UFO-like ones.

I disagree.

Specifically because I myself have absolutely zero trouble following both screens at once.

As it is, I love the bosses in this game, even if some of them (particularly on Extreme) can stomp my face in at times.

Like that one, I think it's number 4, where you're on the TOP screen, and the boss is actually BELOW you, and you have to reflect shots off of those annoying Invaders with the gold shields in order to hit him...... brilliant.

Again though, I've no issues following both screens at the same time. I dont even have to think about it. You'll never hear me blaming a loss on that gap. Instead I'll blame it on me crashing into something idiotically, heh. Usually something that I noticed, fully saw that it was there, pondered it for a moment, and then promptly dove into. Lol.

Or I'll just blame my losses on those #(%&#(*-ing divebombing invaders that launch at you after the first hit on them. GOOD GRIEF DO I EVER HATE THOSE. That they dont need to land anywhere NEAR you to kill you makes it worse (despite of course making perfect sense, being that it's Space Invaders).

And I agree with whoever said the game was similar in style to Pac-Man CE. It really is, isnt it? Same idea.... both games are bright, colorful, vibrant, HARD, and have an absolutely brilliant scoring system that lets YOU decide how YOU want to go after points. And yet neither of them loses any of the charm, challenge, or brilliance that the original games had.

I wish more games were as astonishingly good as this.

Is there really no guide to this yet?

If there IS one, someone please link to it.

If there ISNT, I'll happily just do it myself. I've played this absolutely to death and have found basically every scoring thingie there is to find (including some of the wierder bonuses like that rainbow thing).

QFT. I hated the divebombing ones too, and stage 4's boss was harder than the final boss IMO.

My birthday is on the 4th, so I picked up the paddle controller, the DS version and the PSP version, and got Arkanoid as well. My birthday is now fully planned.

I probably just play with the thing too close to my face. I do usually play my DS on the couch or in bed. Nevertheless on a vertical monitor like on a cab, the screen is tilted back a bit with the bottom closer to you, so there's more in your field of vision. I won't get too technical about it, it's just a nag. I'm getting used to it more.

It does take a little getting used to at first. The DS is a danged odd device till you have used it enough, heh. Same with certain individual games.

I have alot of games on mine..... and of course have played Space Invaders in particular about a bazillionty times..... so Im quite used to it by now.

And again I say......

CURSE those divebombing little snotrags!!!! CURSE THEM!!!!!

I was just playing it, and I was doing well enough..... I got some good points out of the first two stages, and somehow had gotten an extend without even noticing......

Then I get into stage 3-B, and right about in the middle of it, I die 3 times in a row to those little wads of crap. And two of those times, I had the freaking LASER.

Sometimes Im not sure how I manage some of the more idiotic deaths I do in these games......

Those stupid things go down in my book as "most irritating shmup enemy ever"

.....and I want to get that paddle thing too, now that it's mentinoed a few times.

Not for Space Invaders though (I play mostly in Ranking mode, and prefer to have movement be as it always has been in the series), but for Arkanoid, which I picked up recently.

Arkanoid is really nice, very good.

It also hates me. The series always WAS rather difficult.....

How much is the paddle by itself, anyone know? I'd look it up but my Net connection is acting up a bunch, it dont wanna let me offa this site..... beh, probably the stupid modem.

lol, that's your solution right there. do you realize that the paddle makes those dive-bombers a lot less of a problem? getting to them in time to take them out before they strike becomes trivial with it, since travel time is practically eliminated. i think the game was designed with the paddle in mind really.

NCSX has it: http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/TCPP-20018.html

Well they sort of have it...it's currently listed as "Restock in 1-2 days" and here is their latest update:
Update: July 02, 2008 at 10:56AM EST

We will restock the white, silver, and pink Arkanoid paddle controllers on Monday, July 7. The next batch expected on Monday will be our last Paddle Controller shipment and they'll be all gone afterwards. Backorders placed now will ship once we restock. Thanks.
It's $26.90 and shipping is about 8 bucks.

I hope that helps!
