8 bit shooters

Post by NAVVARR »

Anyone here remember the 8bit shooters for the Vic20- i'm talking about Grid Runner, Matrix, LazerZone and Hellgate.

Matrix and Hellgate were really colourful fast shooters with some amazing sonics.

I occasionally load them up and have a wee shot now and then- oh the joys of using Tapes.

If your not familiar with these games- download an emulator -they were originally released on various platforms- like the C64, Speccy and Plus4- but in my opinion- the best were on the Vic20.

The Vic20 also had a load of other fast and frenetic shooters- Dodo Lair- Scramble, Martian Raider, Caterpillar and an excellent version of Jetpac.

Anyone suggest any other 8bit classics mainly for the Vic20- C64 - Plus 4.

Never played the Vic20, but Salamander on the C64 is quite fun to play (Ending is worser than the nes port though).

Fail or mentioning Aleste and not Aleste 2

Fail for mentioning NES version of Salamander as the stand-out, and ignoring the MSX one.

Sucess for mentioning Space Manbow :D

Lol, you actually play that? you can't mention the MSX version of Salamander in the same sentence as the C64 version.

Ask Super Laydock about it.

The MSX version of Salamander is BETTER THAN THE ARCADE VERSION. You just have to be good enough to get past level 1 to realize it. Bigger , more varied levels. More levels. More bosses. More weapons. More jerky scrolling, but this isn't a big problem :). Better level design. Secret levels.... unfortunately most people are just slaughtered on the 1st level and put the game aside.

At least you didn't mention the Spectrum one :)

EDIT: By the way, as I mentioned our user Super Laydock, you should check out the game Super Laydock on MSX, and also Laydock 2... if you are the guy who made up this list, I think one of those games will get into your list (if not both :D)

I think I have the spectrum version of Salamander in the attic, and Flying Shark.

No appology needed, mars man. Not enough people take the time to properly search for things that have already been discussed, so utilizing old data is a great use of the shmups info repository :D
