How's NovaStrike for the PS3?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I've seen some footage of this PSN game, and read it described as a cross between Time Pilot and Xevious, which sounds pretty intriguing to me. IGN gave it a 3.5, how do people on here like it?

I tried to imagine a cross between Time Pilot and Xevious... And I came up with Thunderforce II, oddly enough.

So it's pretty good, then?

i haven't played this yet, but checking out footage on youtube it looks really boring. but then again, i absolutely hate time pilot (which this game very closely resembles).

if you haven't yet, check out everyday shooter. i'm just starting to scratch the surface of this game. it seems really simple at first, but every single level plays differently and the scoring system changes every level. really fantastic to zone out with, especially with the way that the music is affected by how you play.

And on a side note, Raystorm and Einhander showed up on the JP PSN yesterday.

Yeah, I read that on IGN, I wish we were getting Einhander. Hopefully more stuff will show up in the future, because I bought a PSP and some games with my Wii money, and I'm all about this kind of content.

Novastrike looks like Thunder Force II combined with Xevious.

At any rate, I really wish Sony would put some shooters like this-or Super Stardust HD-on their retail interactive units. I mean, how many people have heard of Super Stardust HD, compared with Geometry Wars? Probably not that many.

I don't want this just so I can play it myself, I would like to see the PS3 doing better over here and putting up some exclusive PSN games on retail units for people to play might help, IMO.

Perhaps Sony's just waiting until Home arrives?

It should, since you can create an eboot of your own ps1 games regardless of region and play them fine. I'd highly recommend getting custom firmware for your psp though since you can choose which popsloader version to use. Also, psp games are region free so I don't think that they region lock the ps1 games (not sure if it's possible). I've been playing various ps1 games (ntsc-us and ntsc-j) on my psp (4.01 M33-2) without any problems. Shienryu, Einhander and Raystorm all worked in case you were wondering about those games.

I bought Novastrike and I'm thinking it's pretty good. It's no dodonpachi but it offers something different and the music is great. IGN gave it a low score, I'm guessing it's one of the whippersnappers that don't play shmups and can't handle difficult games. I'm thinking someone that was forced to play a difficult game and gave it a crap score as revenge ;)

I started playing as SOLDIER and it can kick my arse, usually because there are angry swarms of suicidal enemies. You're allowed to continue stages but every stage has a number of tasks and subtasks. It can take more than 10 minutes to complete so when you're near the end you really don't want to die.

UPDATE: Tiki Games have decided we all suck at games and will scale back the difficulty:

They are adding a fourth mode so I can still get my arse kicked ?

Well, it depends on how big the game's eboot is. I'd recommend getting a 4gb card since they're only around $50 now. But considering that a ps1 game can only be up to 700mb since it's a cd, you should be fine with a 1gb card. It all depends on how much stuff you want to put on your card.

Ok, thanks for that info! :D From the way Novastrike looks, I thought that IGN's rating was way too harsh.

played it not much but enough to get a picture, the graphics are ok, action is nice, balancing sucks, game sucks.
a shooter where you have to take damage in order to take out ground targets? wtf i say, i wonder whats up in the creators minds, how can you come up with such a stupid idea and even put thousands into developing such a shit. enough..

seems to be a real big deal to come up with a well balanced shmup for everyone outside of japan these days.
