I don't believe that statement (or the ones that followed) has anything to do with the game or sub-genre, but rather, why the term is always spat out. I know (and knew) why it's considered a Euroshmup, I just don't understand why the term has become almost an insult around here. As for why some people don't like J&G, that's their choice, and I've never wondered about that choice. I liked it, and I'm grabbing the Gold version as we speak. The Coop wrote:Why does the phrase "Euro-Shmup" keep being stated like it's a trait that has to be overcome?

The main trait of euroshmups that pisses people here off is the fact that to make up for the existence of the life bar, they tend to throw undogeable stuff at you, and you have to figure out the way to dodge it that gets you hit the least. Or if you make one too many mistakes on the dodgeable stuff, the undodgeable stuff kills you.

I like how most people have to state the issue of the game forcing you to get hit is some sort of flaw, when every other genre does this and gets no heat. even fucking Run n Guns do that shit by now.
Besides that, it doesn't 'kill' strategy, it just changes the style of strategy handling a bit.

The installer is wrapped in some application that only lets you install it today. So I'd be able to reinstall it in future I was a little sneaky. Fired up one of the SysInternals tools (Process Explorer since I'm on Vista) and saw it had actually written the unpacked installer back to C:\Users\[MYUSER]\AppData\Local\Temp\we12345.tmp (where 12345 were random numbers). Simply snagging a copy of this during installation and renaming to ".exe" worked fine.MathU wrote:Hey guys, they're at it again. Not sure what you mean, PsikyoFan. Could elaborate a bit more?
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. Cool, thanks.

The main problem is you can be "dead and not know it yet".Gungriffon Geona wrote:I like how most people have to state the issue of the game forcing you to get hit is some sort of flaw, when every other genre does this and gets no heat. even fucking Run n Guns do that shit by now.

You dont' know if you lost because you mishandled one too many undodgeable sequences earlier, or if the sequence was actualyl dogeable and you failed to herd the bullets right.
That's what makes thing so cheap. you can't always tell which is which.
And no, others games usually do not do that. they just appear to. Garegga is a notable exeption.
I will give a simple example.
Lets say your life bar can take 5 hits. Early in the level, there is a pattern that appears undodgeable, but isn't... if you are at the right spot when it starts. You are likely to just take the hit and move on. Then later, near the end of the level, you get 5 waves of spread that are too close together to dodge, requiring 1 hit on each of them. WHen you screw up on the first seemingly undodgeable pattern, you are dead, and don't know it yet. THAT'S a Euroshmup trick. First, you ram two bullets on one of teh spreads, and die from that. then you get it all perfect, adn still die because you make a mitake earlier, then yo finally do it perfect except for that first part, and you still die. THEN you finally know that that first part must be dogeable, and spend another 10 trys finding the safe spot.

unfortunately that's null and void because there's not a single euroshmup that pulls cheap crap like that. most health bars are set up to be handled via increments, and not the ammount of hits you can take. this is important because you can tell what projectiles do very little damage and which will fuck your whole run up, and know how to handle patterns based upon this.
GEE I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE HERE ACTUALLY GOT THAT IDEA LOL I BET IT WAS LIKE 3.

My example was extremely contrived, but it does make the point, that it's usually possible to mak ea fatal error, then die from it 5 minutes after the fact.
Even when they give you a life bar, level design came make it effectively into a one hit wonder, because they can throw enough undogeable crap that you have to dodge ALL the dogeable stuff.

Every game recognizes your controller.Tigershark wrote:Well I downloaded it and then discovered it doesn't recognise my game controller so I can't play it. Shite.
With one exception(space race), JnG doesn't have this problem.zaphod wrote:My example was extremely contrived, but it does make the point, that it's usually possible to mak ea fatal error, then die from it 5 minutes after the fact.

Exactly my point.worstplayer wrote:With one exception(space race), JnG doesn't have this problem.
Because giving the lifebar prevents you from giving certain challenges to the player, euroshmups tend to at the very least throw in one obligatory "You MUST dodge everything in this section" area. But instead of making everything in that area an insta-kill, they usually make it so it's not, but then make the next area force you to take enough damage for a kill if you got hit before. On the bright side, it lets you progress forther in the section befor emastering it, which can help you learn it to an extent. But the flip side is you don't know you have to be perfect there until it's too late.
Some do it a lot more than once...
It's sort of like the way that platform games have an obligatory ice world which is an excuse to inflict lousy control on the player for the duration of the level.

Even worse is insta-kill spikes, when every other enemy takes just one bite out of your lifebar. I'm not sure what the equivalent Euroshmup (or general shmup) action is though. Maybe crashing into a wall?zaphod wrote:It's sort of like the way that platform games have an obligatory ice world which is an excuse to inflict lousy control on the player for the duration of the level.
