Best arcade stick for multiple platforms?

Post by FlyingFinn »

I currently own Ps1,Ps2,Ps3,Cube,Wii,XO and Dreamcast. I mostly play shmups on PS2 and Dreamcast, although Wii has also some interesting ones through virtual console and otherwise.

I don't want to invest hudreds of $$$ to different arcade stick so after some checking I have found that several consoles have different kind of controller adapters.

Secondly and perhaps mor importantly, my wife wouldn't be happy to see several large sticks located around living room. I have enough job to hide all consoles from eye. :)

PS2 has some interesting stick choices, but I don't know how adapters to different machines work. And whether it is smart choice for PS3/XO which may be future shmup distributores through PSN and XBLA.

My question:
What would be most practical single-stick solution that I could use in other platforms through controller adapters etc.?

The best solution this is to build yourself a joystick and wire it according to NeoGeo pinouts with a DB15 connector. NeoGeo sticks use one wire per button with a common ground, making them easy to create adapters for any console. If you have no clue how to build one, then take the easy route and purchase a HRAP2 and PSX adapters.

This would be my recommendation also. However, if I could start from the beginning again, I would build to a DB-25 connector so I have more than 4 (+Select) buttons available for the consoles that need them. Then for the supergun it is fine to lose a few buttons in the DB-25 to DB-15 adaptor.

Not a bad suggestion either, though it looks like HRAP2s are becoming tricky to get a hold of.

They've always been pricey, but unless you want exactly an HRAP2, not an HRAP2 SA (the best one ever :P) or an HRAP1 AV (AV = Amazon Version - different colors), times aren't that tough right now (well, there's pocket pain...).

http://store.videogamecentral.com/hori- ... o2-se.html (this is SA, despite the SE written - somebody on the Shoryuken forums confirmed it)

Any Playstation/PS2 stick should be okay for multi-console use, because you can get adapters for just about anything.

I have been working on a multi-console joystick controller for a while, but it's next to impossible for me unfortuntely. I can do USB, Playstation/PS2, Saturn and NES/SNES. I have PS3 partly working too, but as I don't have a PS3 I can't really develop it any more. XBOX and XBOX 360 are trickier, and I don't have a 360 anyway...

If someone with electronics/programming knowledge wants to help, please PM me :)
