Mars Matrix Shield
Does anyone else hate the way the shield works in Mars Matrix? By the time I've held the button down long enough for it to activate I'm normally dead. I can't understand why they didnt allocate another button to work as the shield.

Re: Mars Matrix Shield
ehm... not at all - actually i love it!Hewitson wrote:Does anyone else hate the way the shield works in Mars Matrix?
i own the DC-version and when first trying it on the default controller-setting (X for shooting & A for the shield) it was one of the most frustrating shooter-experiences ever for me...
only when i learned that MM was originally supposed to be played with just one-button-for-all and trying this i started to enjoy the game alot! before that i had the same problem as you with always being a splitsecond-too-late...
therefore i cannot understand how you can have this problem the other way around?

Having a separate action on a separate button trades neural resources for potentially better response time. It's a matter of which of them you are short of.lewisit wrote:therefore i cannot understand how you can have this problem the other way around? :)
For one, I almost always prefer a separate button, fyi, and MM's controls frustrate me as well. I don't like having to maintain proper tap timing, it's tiresome.

Then the problem is not the one-button configuration. It's that you have not played the game enough to know the shield timing.By the time I've held the button down long enough for it to activate I'm normally dead. I can't understand why they didnt allocate another button to work as the shield.
You can't really achieve anything in Mars Matrix without mastering the shield. (score-wise at least)

I like the responsiveness of the MM shield better than the one in Giga Wing, even though I like Giga Wing as a game much more. In MM, it seems like holding down the button will bring out the shield almost instantaneously. In GW there's a much larger delay that means I can't do it as a twitch thing. Luckily GW also has a bomb, which MM seems to lack (in the same sense, I know you can hold the button for longer to get a bomb-thing).

I've never liked the single button control scheme of it either. But I never even realized the game was originally designed for such a thing because I played it on Dreamcast for so long before ever playing in in an arcade.
I guess it's all what you're used to. But it really doesn't work with a single button unless you have an arcade stick and you're pressing that butting with your finger as opposed to using your thumb (with a controller).

That pretty much proves my point.Hewitson wrote:The problem for me is I try to use the shield at the very last second like I would a bomb and I don't allow enough time for the shield to activate.
This means you need to play the game for "many" more hours to be able to really enjoy it.
Or you could stay away from it because of the ugly pre-rendered graphics, the bad/forgettable music, the boring first level and so on.
