I disagree with you on Progear (it has horrible music in my opinion, like a chimp headbutting a keybord), but Pink Sweets has perhaps the best soundtrack in STG history, and one that perfectly captures the giddy, odd thrill of playing such an outwardly antiquated game in the 21st century. Who is this MN guy you refer to by the way? The PS OST seems to have been writtain by many different people.umi wrote:Why does everyone seem to hate Pink Sweets and Progear soundtracks so? I've never understood it :/ I think the Progear music is inspired, and still has that old-school vgm sound. Perhaps not instantly catchy though. Pink Sweets is great if you like MN's stuff, I think. Seem to be quite a few MN haters around here though
Oh, I used to hate that COME ON! track in Gigawing too, but it really grew on me, lol.

Bakraid outside of the game is a little shallow, but otherwise I think it's sum is greater than the parts. If only I could find an OST copy.worstplayer wrote:Bakraid has great soundtrack that perfectly fits the mood of the game. DDP music is also pretty good IMO, although it would be better with more than 4 songs.
Dragon Blaze is alright, medieval/fantasy etc.. although apparently that annoys some people.
Pink Sweets has at least 2 good songs (Stage 3 & 4) while Progear has... about the same(Stage 5[so sue me] and at least another).spadgy wrote:Nobody said Pink Sweets yet? At my local arcade Progear has the sound set embarrassingly loud, but when I play it I can still hear Pink Sweets, which has it's sound at a normal volume, vomiting it's gaudy sound bile into my ears.
I even like happy-hardcore/old skool rave and it's too much...

Don't get me worng. I love the Progear soundtrack - It's a real favourite of mine. I think I've had the end boss music stuck in my head for about two months now, taunting me and my inability to beat the finally two attack stages. Even my wife knows that track just from me 'singing' it in the morning as I shower and strut about in my underwear.umi wrote:Why does everyone seem to hate Pink Sweets and Progear soundtracks so? It's just it's so loud at Casino arcade (Check out the shmupmeets section UK people!) it drowns out the Street Fighter machines on either side and attracts plenty of sighs when you sit down at it. I'm almost convinced you can here people sucking up gems across London...

This is the official ruling?elfhentaifan wrote:Pink Sweets HAS good soundtracks, but the one you mentioned are actually the weakest.Limbrooke wrote:Pink Sweets has at least 2 good songs (Stage 3 & 4)
Ah well taste, you cannot define it![]()
Did you listen to the arranged tracks, too? Also very awesome
5 out of 6 dentists agree that Stage 3 and 4 are the weakest songs from Pink Sweets. Well shucks.
I tend to have faith in strange songs but yes, people will like what they like. For example, Stage 2 in Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 could've been really good if they didn't add that kazoo-like instrument at 15 seconds in... what a waste of a song.
For the PS arranged, doesn't interest me as the normal versions are good enough.
EDIT: Upon sampling the Arranged disc, I'll have to say it fails.

Progear is not the worst, but the only one I can remember standing out as a "man this is irritating". If I spent more time on it I'd have to mute it.
I am kinda disappointed to see Under Defeat in this thread! I thought it was unabashedly awesome kitsch, in the same way that the Ibara and Pink Sweets OSTs were.

It's funky in the wrong way, it's awesomely boring, frustrating and dissonant. I hate it. I wish it were dead.
I have a beef with Blazing Lazers music. While the orchestration is good and the tunes are fitting, they are very short and loop like every twelve seconds. Knowing Compile, I am disappointed.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

This thread is awesome, it's like nonstop flamebait, except that everyone is being serious so it's not. I'm not picking any comments to WTF, I'd have to WTF half the thread.
I wouldn't even say stuff like 1942 has bad music, it's so minimalist I just tune it out. It gets a neutral score like silence. Some soundtracks, I'd prefer silence. Shit that sucks and tries to be dramatic like Donpachi and Battle Bakraid is the worst for me. At least stuff like Raiden Fighters Jet and Dodonpachi is trying to be exciting even if it still sucks.

I just popped in to say that the Under Defeat arrange soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks I've heard on anything.. everything from the compositions to the guitar solos and synth tones rule. That and Omega Five have to be my two favorite recent shooter soundtracks.
For worst.. hmm.. 1942 on NES, the later Seibus when listened to by themselves (and the sound quality.. good gravy!), and I was disappointed by the Ketsui music's lack of variation even though the main theme is good (and the constant amen break abuse. I also have to nominate Soukyugurentai not for bad music, but because the music engine tends to glitch.

hahahaahaha
On topic- 1942 and Xevious came to mind. I'd love to see the OP post a tally of all the votes so far and see what comes out on top (bottom?) I haven't read any of the other posts yet (than the first few)- I didn't want to influence my decision : P I got a feeling that 1942 is going to be mentioned at least a few more times, though.
