Looking for more PS2 shmups.....

Post by -Bridget- »

Ok.

So, I've managed to collect a fair amount of various shmups for the PS2.

So far, I have:

Mushihime-sama
DoDonPachi-Dai-ou-jou
ESPGaluda
Ibara
Shikigami 2
Shikigami 1
Homura
Raiden 3
Gradius V
Radirgy

And recent finds at a convention:

DoDonPachi (well, PS1, but still nice)
Shienryu Explosion (I THINK that's the right name.... there were 2 seperate games on this one, I've seen it on this site's gallery somewhere)
Strikers 1945 1&2
And something else Im forgetting the name of..... "Galaxy Force" it might be, though it's one of those ones that's more like Star Fox.

Anyway, my rambling aside,

I wanna know what other games might be out there for this that Im not aware of. Wether they be available in the US, or imports.

Also if anyone knows of any that might be on the PS3 (not counting downloadable ones).

That'd be a big help, so I can look into what else to obsessively buy :P Though these can be so dang expensive, blah.....

Any help is appreciated :)

Combine the PS2 portion of this post with the list at the shmups.com Xenocide files and you've got a complete list of all available PS2 shmups. Boom, </thread>.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

That's actually the best version to have.

The pros and cons of the best DDP version are in the board FAQs now because people have talked them to death.

Cheat-o shoulder button? You can easily set button C to autofire in the software settings of the DoDonPachi pcb.

The arcade version is best, neither port is perfect after all - I'd only buy the port if you want to play it tated and you PC monitor doesn't like being on its side.

Thats not what i meant.
There was a shoulderbutton that slows down bullets, as far as i am informed.
i never played the port though.

Huh, those are available here and yet it never occurred to me to get them....

And as for that list... gee, there's alot of these.

In particular I'd like to have the rest of the Psikyo ones; Strikers is the only one I have on console from them.

Awesomeness. Now I'll go see about getting me a copy of that Gradius.... cant believe I didnt think of that one.....

Don't forget to get both Psyvariars. If you liked Homura you'll most likely like them as well.

I meant best home port (versus the saturn version). The original post was about psx/2 shmups and the tone of the OP suggested that perhaps the psx version of DDP was somehow inferior to some other home version.

Not quite what I meant; I wouldnt know the difference between the two. Heck, even if I saw them together, I likely wouldnt notice whatever it is. Never had a Saturn anyway.

No, it's just that PS1 imports are muuuuuuuuuch more of a pain for me to run than a PS2 title is.

Though, I have enough trouble with the PS2 and running CD type discs on it..... it really dont like that at all.....

There's a few less brilliant ones to add to the list...

Gigawing Generations
Dragon Blaze
Star Soldier

And one I don't own:
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 2: Sengoku Ace + Sengoku Blade

Some people love 'em of course. I just found those top three not quite for me...

Don't forget the Taito and Capcom arcade compilations.

Taito Legends 2 is especially good.

Agree with the two posts above. :?

Also, I think I would have liked Gradius V and Radiant Bossrushgun a lot better if Silpheed hadn't been my first Treasure game.

Trizeal? pretty basic, but got its heart in the right place.
also seconding the Psyvariars. especially Complete. and even more especially if you find the special edition with soundtrack.

Hardly. It's $10, tops these days. Sure, it's not the PS2's best shmup, but it plays better than the original PC game and the Sega CD remake, looks a lot nicer, has a more interesting story, much better cinemas, and is fun for a play through once in a while.

And really, if he's going to be playing Gradius IV, there's no reason not to try this game as well.

and the Sega CD remake
What? I find the Sega CD version to be much more exciting than the bland and boring PS2 one. THe mixture of graphics, sound, oldschool gameplay and interactiveness with the backgrounds make the Sega CD version a cool ride with lots of adrenalin-rush sections.

The Sega CD version is a fun game to play, and the PC version is a classic undoubtedly... don't get wrong on that. But I feel the PS2 sequel added more variety to the bosses, to the stages, and to the overall gameplay. The only thing it fell short on when comparing it to its predecessors, was that there isn't as much to slam into with the backgrounds. Otherwise, it was a step up in just about all areas IMHO.
