New Galaga sequel in development
It's called Galaga Legions, and it'll be on Xbox Live Arcade!
Hope it's as sweet as Pac-Man CE!

Another Galaga? Huh. Namco doesn't seem to screw up with remakes (so far, so good) so I'm looking forward to this.
Well, I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but Galaga '88/'90 will allow you to start in dual ship mode at the cost of one less life to start with.320x240 wrote:Very interesting. Let's hope they include a mode where you start out with more than one shot at a time.

Let's hope Namco produces something more like their 1995 arcade sequel (great) and not like their dismal 2005 sequel for psp.
I was hyped for the latter when it was announced, only to be utterly disappointed when I finally got my hands on it. This time I'm going into it with expectations low.

I meant a mode where you are not restricted to just one or two shots at a time, no matter if it's single shots or double shots, but are free to shoot as many as you like. The big thing Galaga had over Space Invaders was bettered dynamics - I'd like to see this developed further within the confines of the (sub)genre and dynamic-wise the single/double-shot mechanic is the most restricting aspect of the game. There are other, more dynamic ways of forcing the player to aim his shots.LGB wrote:Well, I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but Galaga '88/'90 will allow you to start in dual ship mode at the cost of one less life to start with.320x240 wrote:Very interesting. I liked the two bullets at a time limit - accuracy really mattered. More than three allowed on screen at a time would take it out of the subgenre - might as well be Raiden or Dopachi if you're armed with a machine gun.
I dunno - the last sequels didn't appeal to me. Gaplus (hehar) for obvious reasons, but Galaga '88 for more insubstantial reasons. Maybe because they tried to make it like other shooters with the scrolling levels, and the silly complexity that didn't add anything.

An XBLA Galaga? Could be fun. I'm curious to see what else Namco can do with it now.
Galaga '88 was a good way to update the original style. Never played it too much, though.
Somewhat related: I found this Japanese Gaplus webpage while looking around. It seems to be an obsessively detailed guide on the game.
Gaplus strayed from traditional Galaga gameplay, but I still liked it. Actually, I think I enjoyed the game more because of it. Besides, the Red powerup that lets you use your own Capture Beam against the enemies had to be seen as pretty cool back when the game was first released.BryanM wrote:I dunno - the last sequels didn't appeal to me. I wouldn't think you'd get that in Galaga, as Galaga is one of the few games today that keep that "one or two bullets on the screen" trait, along with a few other games. I'm happy Namco sticks to this trait constantly; putting in the ability to shoot as many as you like would be a bit too mainstream, for my taste anyway.320x240 wrote:I meant a mode where you are not restricted to just one or two shots at a time, no matter if it's single shots or double shots, but are free to shoot as many as you like. You're certainly running the risk of creating something that doesn't really feel like a game in the Galaxian/Galaga series but as I said earlier there are other ways to force the player to be accurate in his targeting. One way could be by having the score increase more if you hit the center of an enemy than any of the sides. This way the player would probably end up shooting less than in a modern game but at the same time he could choose to go all out in certain parts of the game or at certain enemies.LGB wrote:I wouldn't think you'd get that in Galaga, as Galaga is one of the few games today that keep that "one or two bullets on the screen" trait, along with a few other games. And that would risk the slight chance of a US release.320x240 wrote:You're certainly running the risk of creating something that doesn't really feel like a game in the Galaxian/Galaga series but as I said earlier there are other ways to force the player to be accurate in his targeting. Awesome news!
a new installment in the Gala franchise was way overdue anyway.
More bosses like in '88 please and surely more Galactic Dancing!!!!
At this rate with all the shmuppy things on Xbox live arcade I'd have to own a 360 soon.
Still, is there ANY solution to not lose your games after your console dies???
*edit galacic dancing doesn't make it to the same heights as Galactic Dancing

i must admit that galaga is my favourite game from the golden era of gaming, it just seems such a polished product compared to some others.
i haven't played any of the later versions though not sure if want to spoil my impression of the original.
maybe this sounds a bit snobbish but as a retro gamer I'm not sure that this current obsession with remaking older games is a good thing (ok i know every console generation gets its remakes but the whole online market seems to have launched it into the stratosphere!), it seems a little bit to much about the amount of money a well known franchise can rake in than an actual love of the original game.
maybe its because there are a lot of older gamers trying to get that 80's arcade hit again with more money in there pockets than they had in 82'
ah what the hell its only another 800MS points
