Just sort the categories in MAME
People I have dealt with successfully: bleem (x2), spazicon, sven666, sparky, iatneH, Dragon1952, kozo, Ghegs

about 335 "good" shmups are MAME'd

Pretty much every shmup released for the arcade between 1978 and 2000

2001. You're missing Progear and Vasara 2.

If you're using one of the GUI flavors of MAME, they'll be a collection of folders on the left side of the interface. You can use them to display games that fit into certain categories; all games from 1997, for example, or all 1st person driving games.

MAWS uses the same database, if you want another way of searching.
