I prefer keeping MAME and its ROM-compatible alternatives (like Raine and especially Final Burn Alpha) updated to the latest and greatest, because most releases have useful general features; improvements, or at least new clones, for a handful of games I'm interested in; and some new games worth trying.
If you are less eager than me, updating to MAME's whole-numbered official releases (currently 0.125) and skipping "intermediate update" releases (currently 0.125u3) would be a good compromise.
I suggest that you bring as much as possible of your obsolete ROM collection into the 21st century with ClrMamePro (http://www.clrmame.com/) and acquire updated and new games without haste.
By the way, MAME 0.32 would be from spring 1998 (wow!) but it doesn't exist; what are you really using?

Re: a lil mame help?
MAME is a constantly improving project, in addition lot's of redumps are done.Hardstepah wrote:can anybody give me al ittle help on mame? i had version .32 running but all of a sudden all the games reset after one level or 1 credit.
Emulation is becoming more accurate day by day and lately speed has also been improving.
Throw out .32 and move on to 125.

version ~1.05 to 1.24 of MAME was inferior because of some input lag.
But now everything is corrected and beter than ever with 0.125
also it seems your mame labeled 0.32 is NOT 0.32 but something like ~0.90. "MAME 32" is not the version but the name of the program.
The official MAME website with binary updates every 0.001 versions : http://www.mamedev.org/

In brief:Hardstepah wrote:im unsure of how to use the clrmame, can you help me out?
1a) Create a "profile", i.e. a database of expected ROMs, by specifying your MAME executable.
1b) Specify the directories containing your ROMs in the options panel.
2a) Run the "scanner", prudently specifying to not fix anything, and look at the errors; make sense of them with databases such as MAWS.
2b) Filter the deluge of errors by type of file and error and particularly by excluding completely absent games, which should be the vast majority in sensible collections.
3) Fix incorrect names, redundant files and other errors that don't require downloading and merging extra ROMs from the scanner itself. Confirm every change!
4) Download missing ROMs.
5) The "rebuilder" function can merge old and new files; otherwise you can just put complete new ROM sets with the others and rerun the "scanner" for verification.
Without neglecting the enclosed docs, the official page recommends several tutorials.
The one on mameworld.net is quite clear (but the screenshots refer to old versions of Clrmame, something has changed name and appearance); Doug Burton illustrates steps 1-2 above in great detail but suggests to proceed straight to the rebuilder, which is only safe with a full backup; the recommended French tutorial is the most comprehensive if you know the language.
