It's not a beat 'em up, it's more like Poy Poy (or so I hear, I've unfortunately never played Poy Poy). It is, however, an awesome game in my opinion, especially if you set the speed to the highest setting.Marionette wrote:I dig a good beat 'em up now and again. I heard about Rakugeki Showtime, how does it stack up against the big boys?

I've always enjoyed "Beat m' Ups".
The ones I played/play the most are (going by memory here, so I may accidentaly leave some out) In no fancy order or anything...
Final Fight series, with 3 being my favorite. (SNES versions)
Streets of Rage series. (Genesis)
Double Dragon series, with 1 being my fave. (NES)
Sengoku 3, Neo-Geo
Rival Turf was ok on the SNES
BattleToads in BattleManiacs as well as BT and Double Dragon (SNES)
Golden Axe 1 (Genesis)
I know there are a lot more great ones out there...I just haven't played em yet.
Battle Curcuit from Capcom is pretty cool!

It's a super rare Saturn beat-em-up. I don't think I've even seen this on Ebay.
Another decent one is Nekketsu Oyako for the Playstation.
I own Crows and Nekketsu Oyako for the Saturn.
Crows is OK. Its not mind bogglingly great like Guardian Heroes and the Dungeons and Dragons games, but it is fun and its very pretty... if not incredibly repetitive. Co-op is oddly addictive though. I think I'd give Crows a C+/B-, because it is a good game, it just needed a little bit more "Oomph!"
Nekketsu Oyako... is horrible. The graphics are ugly, the gameplay is choppy and slow, and the only thing it has going for it are the wacky enemy designs. Ick.

Once again I have been misinformed.Davey wrote:It's not a beat 'em up, it's more like Poy Poy (or so I hear, I've unfortunately never played Poy Poy). I just got Dynamite Cop from EB -- they also had River City Ransom EX, but I didn't have much money and I could probably find it cheaper online -- and I love it. It's worth it if only for the ludicrous plot, fucking pirates hijack an ocean liner and kidnap the President's daughter. There are frickin' crabmen. Whiskey tango foxtrot?
I was amazed by the number of weapons available. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would ever get to beat up pirates with French bread and manequins.
I've regretted selling Dynamie Deka for months now, and Dynamite Cop has convinced me I have to get DD back, post haste. (Incidentally, what does "Deka" mean? Cop?)
My top priority right now is getting Streets of Rage 2.

My top 5 of beat em ups:
1. DDII NES, got this game as a kid and it's still my favourite DD of all.
2. Turtles in Time Arcade, I like Konami beat em ups, but if I had to choose one, it's Turtles in Time. This one has it all, very smooth gameplay, nice animation, cool moves, levels, bosses, I like everything about this game.
3. Captain Commando Arcade, my favorite Capcom beat em up.
4. Battletoads versus Double Dragon SNES, I think this is the best beat em up for the SNES.
5. Battletoads Arcade, I think this game has a very unique style, I like it a lot. Lovely smash hits.
Honorable mentions:
Double Dragon Advance
Hook (Arcade)
Battle Circuit
Aliens vs Predator
X-Men (Arcade)
Kunio Tachi no Banka (SNES)

haven't played it in a decade, so i'm not sure if it stands the test of time, but Battletoads arcade kicked some bloody ass. my brother and i used to beg quarters off the rents when we went to Pizza Hut. i have warm fuzzy memories of playing this game. one of the few arcade games i would play, when we still had some in the area.
I have no sig whatsoever.
Does anyone know any sites with screenshots of Crows? All I've ever seen of the game is the cover art and a few tiny images on some scans of the back cover, and I'd like to know what it actually looks like. I found some post in an old forum, someone did a write-up and posted some screenshots, but now all those links are 404.
If anyone is kind enough to send me their copy of the game, I could make some videos / take some screenshots. (Sadly, I don't have a modded Saturn so someone is going to have to trust me with their original copyalpha5099 wrote:Does anyone know any sites with screenshots of Crows? River City Ransom I believe although I'm not quite sure...pablo wrote:Double Dragon 2 for GB. Doesn't even feel like a DD-game as it lacks the typical controls. But it's a classic.
the Streets of rage-series is always good fun. Golden Axe was awesome. Final Fight was sort of bad. What was that NES-game called? Hm. hrm.

I believe pablo was referring to Mighty Final Fight.SheSaidDutch wrote:River City Ransom I believe although I'm not quite sure...pablo wrote:Double Dragon 2 for GB. Doesn't even feel like a DD-game as it lacks the typical controls. But it's a classic.

I love SOR3 and think of it as the finest beat-em-up ever. It was the first game I was interested in before it came out in the US back when the US release was announced in the summer of 1993 (IIRC, at the 'ol Summer CES). Mastered it, can get through on 1 life with everybody except Roo (or rather, I could get through, since this was about a decade ago).
Played way too many forgettable beat-em-ups to care; still demanding more. Haven't really liked any 3D beat-em-up though.

I'd say even the NES version of Battletoads still rocks today.captain ahar wrote:haven't played it in a decade, so i'm not sure if it stands the test of time, but Battletoads arcade kicked some bloody ass. my brother and i used to beg quarters off the rents when we went to Pizza Hut. i have warm fuzzy memories of playing this game. one of the few arcade games i would play, when we still had some in the area.
I found Gekido to be really enjoyable on the PSX. When I got it, I was really surprised to see it was designed by Naps Team, which before that, I belivied it had done only one game (Shadow Fighter on Amiga, which was, at time of its release, the best beat'em up available on Amiga)

I love beatemups. What other genre lets you punch a fat guy until he falls on the ground, barfs up a roasted turkey dinner, and then blinks out of existance?
The weapons in Dynamite Cop are humorous, who'd knew that French bread rolls, a manniquen, or a frozen tuna would make good weapons?
River City Ranson is also a great game, you get to beat up other high school students, and take their lunch money. They also yell "BARF!!" when they blink out of existance.
I'm trying to remember this one Beatemup that was zombie/undead themed. Two of the guys was an American guy with a bionic arm, and the other a European that used a magic crystal as a weapon.

Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
Just saw this topic and decided to throw in a few good beat em ups that people should try.
Knights of Valour
Oriental Legend
Guardians/Denjin Makai II
Gaia Crusaders
All four are very fun and have a lot of depth. Knights of Valour is even over an hour long. Oh, and they're all available on Mame.
We should talk tiers, btw. That should be a fun discussion.

So what do you call Dragonninja then?chtimi wrote:dragonninja is not really a beat them up because you're only moving horizontally.
otherwise i recommend ninja baseball batman too, especially in 2P.
also try knuckle bash by toaplan, it's bad but the design is very good and funny.
Because you DO beat people up after all!
What is the best verison of Dragonninja?
Ever released on a DATA EAST compilation? No? It's about time they did!
