PS2 shmups on PS3

Post by Elaphe »

Do you know what PS2 shmups work flawlessly in PS3? And what about japanese games, will they work in a PAL PS3?

Sorry, don't have a clue.

Not a chance. PS3 is region free only when it comes to PS3 native software I'm afraid.

Indeed. The probelm is due to regionalisation laws. Because the PS3 is region free, all PS3 games get simultaneously agreed upon by all regions before release. PS2 games didn't go through the same process however and had different releases for different regions. The amount of red-tape involved in making PS2 games region free for PS3 would be insurmountable.

The PS2 backwards compatibility list for backwards compatible PAL PS3 models is located here:

If you want the PS for shmups, then your choice is a japanese PS2 system or a modded PS2 to make it region free. You can't go wrong my friend...

XII Stag will not look horrible on 1920X1080 at all, because that ps2 game has a native 480p option (please confim 480p mode on us version of XII Stag), enabled with Square-X during start up, this will force your ps3 to display this game on 480p and it will look glorious on your hd tv.
Please keep in mind that all games listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HD ... _PS2_games will look great on a ps3 as long as you use the 480p code. Other ps2 games are 480i and will look blurry on your ps3 as they looked blurry displayed through a ps2.

The point is, is that ps1 and ps2 games will look better displayed through a ps3 because of hdmi. Those 480p games should be played with the 480p code. 480i ps2 and ps1 games should be upscaled to standard ps3 resolution, in this case 1080p.

I have another list of compatibilty on ps3, goes for ps1, ps2 from all regions!

I could not find the US version of XII Stag, but the Japanese version seems fine so my guess is that it will be fine.

Do get a hdmi cable, the cheapest you can find, ebay 10 bucks or lower. it makes no difference as long as its hdmi!

The fact that you expect anything different makes me question your mentality.

Upscaled games doesn't equal better quality, for people who are wanting to display them how they were originally intended to be displayed, you might as well forget about the PS3 entirely.

Sometimes they do. I'm not in the mood to give lots of examples, you figure it out!

*sigh* here we go again. XII Stag is a 480p game. The only way to do that with a ps2 is the component cable and on a 480p capable tv.

HDMI>component
So the PS3 wins in the cases of 480i and 480p ps2 games.
ps2 games with 240p modes however is another story, they will probably be best displayed with a RGB cable on a ps2.

I think it's time I made a site to explain all this so I could link everyone to that site who was confused :D
