Wii component cables

Post by Daigohji »

Gah, I used to see the official Wii component cables everywhere until a couple of months ago. Now that I've got an HDTV suddenly I can't find them in UK stores. I placed an order on Play a week ago, but it's still out of stock. I'm tempted to cancel the order and go with a third party alternative, but don't know if any of them are good quality. Can anyone recommend a third party Wii component cable? Joytech, PEGA, Logic3 and Game's own brand are the ones I see around.

I bought the $10 one from play-asia which I gave to my friend before I got my own system, and I got a $15 or $20 one from yesasia. Some Chinese brand, but I haven't gotten tetanus from it or anything so I have no complaints. It's not like a GameCube component cable so anything cheap ought to be fine.

I usually agree with cheap cables, but I grabbed some Wii component cables from dealextreme... and they really were shit. The amount of noise I was getting made it worse than composite. Fixed by splicing a PSX video cable (official sony...) into the video lines.

I'm not entirely sure, but my Madcatz cables seem to look slightly worse than the GCN's component cable.

It really would be easier to tell, or explain, with 720p or something.

I ended up getting Game's version of the cable. On the plus side the build quality looks fine and there's no obvious ghosting or colour bleed (though I haven't tested extensively yet). Aside from that I was pretty disappointed though. It should be noted that the previous cable I was using was the official RGB SCART rather than the crappy composite, so I shouldn't be surprised that there wasn't much difference. What did surprise me was that some games look better while others look worse verse the RGB SCART. The textures in Mario Kart Wii are a little more detailed with component and 480p, but No More Heroes is significantly more aliased. All my VC games work with it, though Streets of Rage switches back to 576i. PC Engine games look much sharper with component.

The biggest disappointment was with Gamecube games. I though that most GC games supported 480p and that this would work through the Wii, but none of the games I've tried offer progressive scan when I boot them up. A quick google search suggested that this functionality was pointlessly ripped out of the PAL versions.

Considering the relative performance of the RGB SCART cable I already had and my Panasonic LXD70's capabilities with SD sources, I feel like I've wasted my money on this component cable. The only solid benefit is that I've freed up a SCART socket so that I don't have to keep switching cables back and forth between my Wii and VCR :?

I dunno what TV you're using, but aliasing is semi-fixable on a tube with the sharpness controls (and possibly some service mode adjustments).

The significant advantage of 480p over component 480i is lag reduction, IMO.

It's no problem finding an Official Nintendo Wii Component Video Cable set at electronic stores such as Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. -- be prepared to spend about $29.99 to $34.99 USD for one...

Actually, it was a problem finding the official cables at local stores (or anywhere else), hence why I ending up getting a 3rd party one. The only place that had one was HMV, and they were charging £28 (approx. $56).
