Anyone has an idea which one introduced this little graphic touch?

You mean like when the ship banks either left/right to go left/right or up/down (in horis, despite that not making sense)? Or something else?

Yeah, with the banking in horis they should really be moving into the background or foreground. Having the ship nose up or nose down would screw with things too much, I guess.

Anyway, Gradius is the first game I can think of. That's 1985. Anyone got anything earlier?

Yeah, I'm talking of that effect and yes, Gradius was the first title I thought to either.

But Tempest's claw doesn't properly tilt...

Cool, Vulgus... Let's see if it really was the first one!

River Raid had ship tilting.

For the Atari VCS or better know thereafter as the Atari 2600... ^_~

Gary Kitchen's River Raid II added different gameplay mechanics to the traditional River Raid gameplay first introduced by Carol Shaw...

In Imagic's June 1983 released game of Moonsweeper for the 2600 platform, your U.S.S. Moonsweeper spacecraft can tilt at a 45 degree angle in both left & right directions, perfect for pulling off those tricky aimed shots to kill those pesty surface destroyers roving the said moon's landscape.

In the color vector arcade game of Sega's Tac-Scan circa 1982, you control a cluster of ships with a rotary spinner controller + razor sharp vector graphics to boot...the 2600 port of the same name was cool in that you could use 2600's paddle controller to play it with. ^_~
