Because I find fractals attractive.
I want to create a topic about fractals. Most of the time people want to reduce math to a linear school educational subject. I want to take people down a road less thought about. I want to talk about fractals.
What is a fractal? Well in short, it is an infinitely complex mathematically defined shape that exists between whole dimensions.
Lets look at them from an aesthetic standpoint. They have all kinds of shapes and we can see their intricacies when they are colored using values generated from pixel positions.
Here is a great page to view some:
http://www.bugman123.com/Fractals/Fractals.html
As another point of interest my favorite types of fractals are called Lindenmayer Systems. I love them because from a few very simple rules we get shapes that look like some patterns in nature.

In each new generation you replace a branch with x many smaller branches. If you look at a tree you find a very similar structure.
I just want to discuss fractals if anyone is interested.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Tons of old school demos use it, Crystal Dream 2 by Triton:

Mandelbrot and other fractals look like ass for most of the time as far as I'm concerned (awful colors), "Vectorslime" in this demo looks way better.

People are posting demos to youtube??!?! This is the first I've seen of this. This feels somehow wrong. But interesting, at least it gives people a taste of what they missedzinger wrote:Tons of old school demos use it, Crystal Dream 2 by Triton:

Yes, it's blasphemy in a way (try watching any of the dot scenes in Desert Dream on youtube
). Still, I think it's a good way to discover demos you've missed,
and hunt down the originals of the best ones and try to run them. The second best thing is definetly those demo DVD's like Mindcandy and what else.

I don't read anywhere that those are fractals.moozooh wrote:http://electricsheep.org/Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Lets look at them from an aesthetic standpoint.

Install it and see for yourself. This a distributed computing fractal flame building screensaver.
Or just snatch a kickstart sheep set and watch them, they're distributed as mpeg2 videos.

Fractals (or at least images rendering them) are among the most beautiful things ever to be seen.
I've been fascinated by them since I saw an Amiga generated image of one in an old magazine.
I thought it was beautiful, but didn't understand why it should be more special than other nice looking pics.
After I saw some in some demo's on Amiga I got more interested and liked them more.
Never tried to find more details about them, but seeing that doc featuring A.C. Clark (thanks for the link btw!!!) I think I understand there appeal to me even more.
Could watch them forever (literally here).
