Movies for self-destruct

Post by CMoon »

Damn, my copy of Life Aquatic is loaned out.

What does that leave, Grizzly Man? Orca???! Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia? Shit! Is it finally time for Touch of Evil again!?

What movies do you self destruct to?

After checking out "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" on IFC, it is an interesting movie made by Sam Peckiah (is that the correct last name spelling of it?). The other movie with Dustin Hoffman in Straw Dogs was considered a controversial movie when it first came out back in 1970 was directed by the same director as the former.

You might want to revisit the black and white indie flick of "Man Bites Dog" for some super crazy rampant shootings for the sheer thrill of it commited by a Dutch professional gunman with a indie camera team tagging along & filming everything that he does. The body count is unbelievable in it! So much death and destruction that it seems to parody itself in the process...

That Bill Murray film of "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" is a plain crazy parody adventure -- be prepared to laugh your ass off with this one! I like the cool techo music being played during the shootout scene...fits perfectly for that particular "all hell breaks loose" setting. ^_~

Good film! Contains one of my favourite lines:- "I always like to start the month with a postman."

I've been on a Warren Oates film binge recently. Sam Peckinpah's 'Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia' is quite decent. I'm still looking to get another Warren Oates rarity: "Cockfighter" (and I'm not referring to GaijinPunch's thread  ).

You are kidding, right? Where is your sense of self-loathing?

Regarding Life Aquatic--yeah, I was really in a mood to rewatch it. It is a comedy, but also rather brutal at the same time with muted emotions where the very worst things are happening to the main characters and they are basically just taking it. I like how they contrast this with absurd and surreal cartoon-ish images of nature.

Re: Man bites dog. Seen it, not one of my favorites. Sometimes it is very hard to find that 'type' of movie you are looking for. You often only know once you've seen it.

Check out Hundstage.

EDIT: Cockfighter has an epic tagline for sure:
He came into town with his cock in hand, and what he did with it was illegal in 49 states.

I was supposed to write an essay on that, if I hadn't dropped out. Missed some opportunities to pun about suturing the phallic nose, to brownnose my sexy prof, no doubt with a Young Ones allusion or three. Nozin' aroun' and television's negative interpellative capability.

That movie pisses me off :x

It's got a great soundtrack though :)

Also, "ASS TA ASS" is pretty much the funniest line in any movie, ever

What an overrated, melodramatic waste of film. Great cinematography, soundtrack and hallucination scenes though.
Pi is still his best film.

When I want to indulge in self-loathing, I don't watch movies. I just play some shmups and then compare my scores to the high scores on this board. 'Why you shit on me?' I cry, my face awash with tears. 'Whyyyyyyy!'

I believe its Sam Peckinpah.

I like "Memento". This guy totally comes apart, in reverse...

I disagree, though the portrayal of drug addiction is a bit over the top. Now the Fountain.... THERE'S an overrated, melodramatic waste of film.

NO U

Ahem, sorry. I like all of Aranawfski's films, but they certainly do get better as they go on. I'm surprised by all the Fountain hate. I guess it does nessesitate at least one or two repeated viewings though.

That doesn't work for me because I can't play shmups while I'm drunk.

Dead Ringers is a nice, cold piece of self-destruction.

Also, to varying degrees: Videodrome, Naked Lunch, and, hell, most other Cronenberg flicks.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man is always a heavy downer for me.

And dang Sam Peckinpah rules. I just discovered him a few years ago when a friend surprised me with Straw Dogs. Yikes!

I really need to see it... Perhaps I'll rent it tomorrow or something.
If your interested in Icelandic cinema/misery films, I recommend Djöflaeyjan (Devil's Island) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116116/ and Englar alheimsins (Angels of the Universe) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233651/ .
Both are based on books that have been translated, and are available on amazon.
