PC Engine rise in popularity
I've been noticing an increase in the price of PCE games on ebay for one example Coryoon auctions ending recently for approx £85 ($170), it was selling for approx £40 ($80) before, I hope this reflects a rise in general popularity of the machine.
Maybe something to do with PCE/TG16 Games available on Virtual Console?

The Duo DOES have Lords of Thunder, but I play import Hu-Cards the most (Duo-R). 'course many of those came out in the US as well-- the US game selection for that machine is underrated.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: Take a hint: Get a Turbo Duo, you won't regret it... ^_~

Jap DUO or a PC-engine with a Super CD Rom2 is the way IMOlouisg wrote:The Duo DOES have Lords of Thunder, but I play import Hu-Cards the most (Duo-R). 1: That way you can play Jap Hu-Cards which has the best selection.
2: You can also play 'Arcade Card' games.
3: You can play Jap and US CD titles, with the CD titles its sometimes better to get US versions such as for RPGs, unless you can read Japanese.

To sell a TG-16 without consulting first with your friend is bad news, indeed...indstr wrote:A friend and I went in together and bought a tg16 back in about 1999, and maybe 4 or 5 games...
I went and sold it without telling him, because I needed some quick cash at the time.
Suffice to say he was mad
I'd never sell my TG-16, Turbo Express or Turbo Duo since they all were bought brand new and I'm the original owner of them -- they still keep on ticking like a fine wristwatch... ^_~

You'll need a PC Engine/Turbo DUO with the Arcade RAM Hucard. Only the Supergrafx can play Supergrafx games, but it requires separate BIOS cards for both Super CD and Arcade CD games and requires the CD expansion.nimitz wrote:What is the "ultimate version" of the PCE? one that can play every single game and is not too expensive.
the pc engine duo? or a pc engine with the super cd-rom 2? or something else?
The PC Engine hardware is pretty convoluted.

I don't remember which console/adapter would allow you to play the most games from all regions.

Word. I don't know what market value is on a plain jane Duo, but I'd expect below $100. Arcade card might set you back $50? So, said and done you should be under $200 shipped to play all your fave PCE titles.Django! wrote:You'll need a PC Engine/Turbo DUO with the Arcade RAM Hucard.nimitz wrote:What is the "ultimate version" of the PCE? one that can play every single game and is not too expensive.

If you wanted region free action it might cost you $50 to have someone mod your Hu Card slot. A mod-free alternative would be using a US Duo with a Kisaido Hu Card converter which just slides into your existing Hu Card slot and allows JP Hu Cards to run. And if you don't mind having two systems, you could always have a US Duo and a JP Core Grafx, which is so cute you wouldn't mind if it was painted pink and had a little bow tagged up in the corner.

As to why NEC didn't sell cute pastel colored PCE consoles -- that, right there, is an untapped source of revenue... ^_~iatneH wrote:Don't be giving me ideas now...undamned wrote:JP Core Grafx, which is so cute you wouldn't mind if it was painted pink and had a little bow tagged up in the corner.
Actually, one would just need an NEC Arcade Duo Hu-Card for use with any PCE Duo console and either a Kisado or Murai Hu-Card convertor with the Turbo Duo variant -- you'd be all set to play virtually any PCE CD-Rom2, Super CD-Rom2, and Arcade CD-Rom2 game title with nothing else to buy... ^_~
You might recall that Matt Ross has modded some Duos in the past with the Arcade Card Duo upgrade installed internally eliminating the need to stick it into the existing external Hu-Card slot would be a better & more elegant & refined solution. Might as well use that empty Hu-Card slot with an optional NEC Tennokoe Bank Hu-Card instead for PCE game saves.
It's doable to replace the stock internal Super System Upgrade Card v2.0 (or the v3.0 USA Turbo Duo region variant along with the required internal Hu-Card convertor hack) with an Arcade Card Duo, and viola, you're all set...
The Arcade Card Duo, itself, retailed for a whopping 17,800 yen when it first made it's debut in Japan...very pricey upgrade back in the day and added an additional 16mb of RAM to the Duo. ^_~

Do you have one? Do you have to change a switch to activate it? Sorry undamned, I just have a plain vanilla Turbo Duo and have to resort to using a white colored Murai "boxy-styled" Hu-Card convertor with said Arcade Card Duo upgrade...still works like a charm. ^_~undamned wrote:Do you have one? I recall that Matt Ross having sold one or two of those modded Duos with such upgraded Arcade Card Duo internally. Very nice Duo setup, indeed. Now if he was still doing such Duo mods, I'd have him installed such an internal Hu-Card conversion mod and replace it with said Arcade Card Duo upgrade -- that would be one heck of a Duo setup right there... ^_~

That's actually quite a good price, imported Jap DUOs usually sell for approx £100 ($200)Django! wrote:150$nimitz wrote:Wow, I just checked on ebay and the PCE DUO is more expensive than a Neogeo.

But saying that this one works out to be nearly that price once you add on the $65 EMS shipping from Japan.
Yeh I would say they cost around the same price of a NeoGeo AES.

The PCE certainly deserves to come back into vogue because IMHO it is THE finest console for shmups . . .ever (and that includes current gen).
I sold my Turbo Duo a while back and have regretted it ever since . . .although Magic Engine does a sterling job of emulating the various systems.
But . . .it ain't the same somehow . . .

I have got a supermint jp Duo which is complete w/every bag and all that shit. It was expensive, but I don't regret one single cent of the price I paid. PCE-games are the perfect addition to the MD and SFC lineup, with the difference that CD-games have brilliant soundtracks with which cart-based consoles can't compete.

Duo's aren't cheap to ship. Like $40-$50 to the US, so someone has to eat that cost when they're resold. They sell for over $100 in Japan as well. Last two I got were RGB-modded though.
For you guys that want a region modded solution, you should just get a JPN Duo-R or RX, then a TurboGrafx to play US Hucards if you want. It's actually a whore to get a working region-free setup. Kisado converters are a bitch to find from what I understand. But what do I know... I've never bothered with one.

Unless there was another that ended at the same price, that auction you are referencing was for a BRAND NEW SEALED Coryoon.HardcoreOtaku wrote:I've been noticing an increase in the price of PCE games on ebay for one example Coryoon auctions ending recently for approx £85 ($170), it was selling for approx £40 ($80) before, I hope this reflects a rise in general popularity of the machine.

It is hardly applicable to compare it to the typical $80 price of a used copy.
this too:

I remember reading C&VG and drooling over the two page ads with all the PC-Engine, Neo-Geo and Genesis gear laid out side by side. The white PC-Engine is the nicest console ever. I also loved the looks of the game covers and cartridges/cards. From time to time I still think about making a game for that console, just for the sake of having done it. Having my own game on a cartridge has been a dream since the C64 days. Sniff...undamned wrote:And if you don't mind having two systems, you could always have a US Duo and a JP Core Grafx, which is so cute you wouldn't mind if it was painted pink and had a little bow tagged up in the corner.

Not sure which one it was TBH, even if it was that one I've noticed there doesn't seem to be a massive difference in price (when its auctioned) between sealed new and used PC-E games anyways.Koa Zo wrote:Unless there was another that ended at the same price, that auction you are referencing was for a BRAND NEW SEALED Coryoon.HardcoreOtaku wrote:I've been noticing an increase in the price of PCE games on ebay for one example Coryoon auctions ending recently for approx £85 ($170), it was selling for approx £40 ($80) before, I hope this reflects a rise in general popularity of the machine.

Yes, Kisado convertors are pricey ranging from $100.00 - $150.00 USD easily...most folks don't mind the high cost to get one. ^_~GaijinPunch wrote:Duo's aren't cheap to ship. Yeah, those are a little expensive for convertors. Seems like the best route may be to just buy a jp system.. I noticed on eBay (when I looked) there are lots of Japanese hu-cards from domestic sellers, and I can't think of too much stuff that only came out here. Now I buy most of my stuff from Wolfgames, and my US Turbografx just gathers dust.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:
