Of the 4 new suggestions I would rate them as follows:
1 - W Ring - fits the bill perfectly.
2 - Star Parodiar - there, but I dont know how long I could play it & stay interested.
3 - Return of the Invaders - a new spin on an old classic & one I would pull out occasionally when I just wanted to shoot something.
4 - Cloud Master - far too simplistic for my taste.

LGB, you may be right. Maybe Im looking for "drug 'em ups"...
I think R-Type Leo is a good example too.
So what are good example of "drug 'em ups"?
Truth, is in the Mind of the Beholder...

The gameplay of Air Zonk Hu-Card release is better than that of Super Air Zonk Super CD-Rom2 release due to using two different dev. teams for the former & the latter game titles... ^_~

Air Zonk feels like as if it was developed for an arcade PCB platform rather than the tiny but lively PCE/TG-16 console platforms and with a dizzying amount of colors spread across the rainbow spectrum. This would've made a great PCB to own by itself if there was one developed IMO. Best fifteen bucks I ever spent on buying Air Zonk brand new from Toys-R-Us back in 1994... ^_~

In 1993, Irem took some inspiration from Air Zonk and created their own brawler game called Ninja Baseball Man PCB -- crazy and colorful game in it's own right... ^_~
