Metal Black "Black Fly" represent! The ugliest, most pugnacious ship in shooting.

edit: although from that angle and with less metallic color, it looks quite cool.

I'm quite fond of it too. It looks no-nonsense and very industrial, which fits the game's depressed mood perfectly. Also, MB's action is very "brawling," with lots of grueling close-quarters action. So a purpose-built, slightly stubby ship fits much better than the Vic Viper "jetfighter" archetype. It's not a pretty ship, in fact it's quite unattractive, but it's exactly what MB's atmosphere ordered.

I think that model, as cool as it is, interprets the in-game sprite quite differently. As does the game's official artwork. That model looks more articulated, while the artwork is a bit sleeker. More like Darius' Silver Hawk.

About Battle Garegga's ships: The regular 4 ships have 4 different names depending on their type but the extra characters, Chitta, Gain, Miyamoto and Bornnam are just called Gain A, Gain B, Gain C, etc...
The correct list would be:
Silver Sword
Cannon Ball
Masamune
Shatter Star

Grasshopper
Reinforcer
DGR October
Diving Fox

Flying Baron
Stormy Omen
Red Impulse
Black Zeppelin

Wild Snail
Iron Mackerel
Rust Champion
Golden Bat

Gain

Chitta

Miyamoto

Bornnam
The other names usually refer to the character's bomb or option shot. I don't know why these are used to describe the special character's types in the highscore topic, but it's just plain wrong.

You have a point there, but what about these names:

-Battle Valhalyzer
-Neo Gundalf
-Samurai Dragon
-Final Golgodian

They DO sound like ship names.

Well actually these are the names for the ships, you're right. But when you talk about the ships you usually call them by the pilot (for the extra characters) Or would you call the Wildsnail by it's ship name G-913?

SOQ 004 - Toryu (Dragon Slayer)

Color: Red
Speed: Quick
Shot pattern: Straight + Diagonal Angle fire
NALS Webs:
Ei-Dou: semi-circle web, laser fire
Pin-Point: cone web, incendiary fire
Pilot: Kaoru Yoshida

Department manager of the Defensive Section 2 and one of the most talented SOQ fighters in the line. Though being the oldest and most experienced of her team-mates, she is also the most advanced member of her team in regards to bone strengthening and neurological enhancements, making her the optimum fighter pilot in deep-space combat. Despite facing social nuances such as a bitter divorce and starting a new family, she is a confident woman who forgets her worries in her work.

SOQ 010 - Shien (Purple Lightening)

Color: Blue
Speed: Average
Shot pattern: Wide-Spread fire + Miniature-Homing Missile launchers
NALS webs:
All Range: full circle web, centralised electric fire
Bou-Ryu: semi-circle web, laser fire
Pilot: Ryota Mikazuki

The newest and youngest member of the SOQ Defensive Section 2 and has been with the Jin-Sei’s defense program for a year. Has excelled in physical training as well as the NALS fighting system, proving to be an excellent pilot with a strong and boisterous spirit under a moody facade. What few people know about him however is that he is one of President Miama’s sons; he went into hiding years ago for being unable to ventilate his feelings and emotions about the family company which he could not confront his father with.

SOQ 025 - Houga (Fang)

Color: Green
Speed: Slow
Shot pattern: Heavy fire + Dual Directional guns
NALS webs:
Random: multi-directional cone web, incendiary fire
Mu-Sou: cone web, laser fire
Pilot: Rika Kunimura

Her primary role in the Jin-Sei is Defense Plans & Operations chief assistant. She has had previous experience with the NALS fighting system since her school days, but because of her quarrelsome and independent nature she was issued to the Lunar surface mining facility for the company. During an attack on the facility, she was called into action by the main office and because of her excellent combat skills during a time of emergency was promoted to the SOQ. Her argumentative and liberal views are rooted in the fact that she is partly Swedish on her mother's side and was raised that way, which may explain why her speech and behavioral patterns are misinterpreted by her companions, but deep down she is a very compassionate woman.

Need data on the SOQ 026 though.

I've put down the name of every ship in Change Air Blade, but there are four ships with japanese names. Can someone translate them?

Plasmo wrote:When you talk about the ships you usually call them by the pilot.
Of course, but on this particular list, where we put down the ship names, we should use Battle Valhalyzer, Neo Gundalf etc instead of the pilots.

EDIT: Thanks for the tip Enhasa.

No, I would say they're proper crafts, I think you really ought to include them. The character names are all Mika, Changpo, etc. Most people don't know the rounder names. It's a moot point anyway, since when you go into boss, those are obviously ships.

To be more precise, it's not really player and enemy so much as it is 1p and 2p. Also, I know this isn't any help, sorry, but I just call those ships Mosquito and Flying Pancake. ;)

Excellent, updated.

Now I think I'll merge the Raiden Fighters entries and the Sonic Wings series - it has little sense to list the same ship twice just because it's included in the sequel.

I know I've seen the ship in Space Megaforce referred to as the ED-057 (or something like that...doesn't a user around here have that as his name, or at least used to?), though I'm not sure whether that was also the name in Super Aleste, or whether it was "Westernized."

Not just an user - an Oldschoolers buddy! Check my banner ^_^

Anyway, yes, I think ED-057 is a western made up. But I can always list it under Space Megaforce...

Believe it or not, there are many pictures available at Shoot The Core (models section), R-Type Hangar, R-Type Museum, Eightbit Fighters and some other webpages.

Of course, an animated gif capture of each sprite would be a total awesomeness...

Oh yeah, the ship in Cyber Core is a transforming "entity" called [CHIMERA]. Looks like a ship to me. It's probably one of those "organic ships".

This thread is just a preliminary phase - once I've gathered the most info on all the vessels, I'd like to launch a poll/contest:

"The Top 25 mecha/industrial design vessels in shmups, ever"

Please continue to look for ship names and more importantly ships specs!

@Laydock: you're welcome. :)
