Board's consensus on the Star Soldier series?
Howdy.
A discussion of the Virtual Console on another forum brought up Star Soldier R, WiiWare's premiere shmup. While it's not similar to Geometry Wars or Stardust HD, they're making changes to the game to create a more highscore/competitive based bit of software.
I've always enjoyed the series. Actually, probably one of the firsts that I really spent some time with. I didn't have the luxury of owning a TG16 as a kid, so I never got to know the finer points of the series. 20 - 30 minutes per shot at a friends house just doesn't give you the time to focus.
I like how Star Soldier R on the Wii is going to introduce a combo system. I've always appreciated the art style and the crazy weapon/smart bomb system, but the series has always been pretty linear... and some what easy.
Though, funny anecdote. When SEGA was playing up the awesomesauce Blast Processing, I wasn't impressed. I had played Final Soldier, I had already seen speed.
Thoughts?
EDIT
Star Soldier R is scheduled for a May 19th release according to IGN.

Anything like the chaining system in Star Soldier Vanishing Earth? For better or worse that completely changed how the caravan section played.Django! wrote:I like how Star Soldier R on the Wii is going to introduce a combo system.

Here's a good vid of the five minute mode:

Was there a chaining system in Caravan modes for Super Star Soldier? I don't remember there being one in Soldier Blade. I always thought that when playing the series for high scores it was more about weapons + best position to take out the most enemies and enemy structures.
FYI, Star Soldier R will have online leader boards.

SB takes advantage of TG-16 & Duo memory saves...
On the real Turbo Grafx-16 & Turbo Duo hardware setup, Hudson Soft's USA region Soldier Blade will take advantage of either the TG-16's optional Turbo Booster Plus accessory or the bullt-in Memory Manager functionality of the Duo. Both will save high scores for the regular game and both Caravan timed stages of Soldier Blade...
Just be sure to power up the Duo or the TG-16 with Turbo Booster Plus once every few weeks to recharge the built-in memory saving electronics so it doesn't go "hasta la vista" and vanish forever. It helps to format the Turbo Duo's memory manager first before saving your high scores for your TG-16 games that do utilize such memory saving functionality.
Of course, an optional NEC Tennokoe Memory Bank Hu-Card will save it for posterity (until the back-up battery goes dead...) ^_~

I knew. I was just wondering why you called it Soldier Blade series. By the way, Final Soldier goes before Soldier Blade.Django! wrote:It's been a series.
Star Force
Star Soldier
Super Star Soldier
Soldier Blade
Final Soldier
Vanishing Earth
Star Soldier R
Some people include Blazing Lasers and Starship Hector in the series as well.
I can see why Starship Hector is there; Carivan Shooting Collection. Blazing Lazers... hmm. I guess, but it wasn't really made by Hudson. Of course, then you've got Star Force, which wasn't made by Hudson either; maybe it was made by the same staff as Star Soldier.

You should. Hector is just plain fun. Final is a lot like Super; same weapons and all. But you can change the weapons you get throughout [the main game], and there's extra difficulties.Django! wrote:Oh, oh my bad.
I've never played Hector or Final Soldier.
(I don't mind. It's just threads like these seem good to get out small matters like this.)

A number of the games - Super Star Soldier, Star Parodier - were apparently actually made by Kaneko, so yeah this series has been around (like yo momma on Friday night)LGB wrote:Of course, then you've got Star Force, which wasn't made by Hudson either; maybe it was made by the same staff as Star Soldier.

The PCE/TG-16 release of Air Buster/Aero Blasters is better than it's counterpart of MD/Genesis port of Air Buster with it's consistant arcade-spec 60fps framerate and more colors displayed on-screen thanks to Interstate and Kaneko pulling off a miracle. ^_~worstplayer wrote:Air Buster and Cyvern.Django! wrote: What else has Kaneko done?
(Plus some uhh, less than good games on Genesis)
Alrighty then, folks, it's back to the Soldier Blade topic...

I have one on Magic Engine...I think it's Soldier Blade.
It's alright. The stages don't have much variety, and it loses my interest.
I wouldn't mind playing a tightened up version, if one has ever been made.
