In shmups, your progression through stage is fixed and you can't go backwards.
And I thought I was having some quality shmup time last night playing Fantasy Zone on PC-Engine.
Anyway I've got this on Dreamcast and it was ok for a quick blast but its higly improbable i ever play it again. Not a very god game in my view either.
Phil, if you like Expendable but want something with a little more...grit, try Contra: Shattered Soldier on PS2. In terms of quality it's probably the exact polar opposite of Expendable - i.e. a really fantastic run & gun game, with some 3D elements.
Hard as nails though so you need to be ready for a challenge.

IIRC - Those Expendible PC shots are from a certain Matrox graphics card and it was a special version of the game designed to show it off.
I remember as it nearly caused me to buy one back then....

Generally it's any of those games in Shatterhand's post. However, Expendable could also be considered a shmup, as it has no platforming aspect. Games like expendable are called "arena shooters" and somehow fall into the borderline shooters, like certain run n' gunner games.
To be honest, I think the run n' gun genre is the ultimate shmup genre, because it's a nice cross between a shooter and a platformer. And then you got games like Alien Soldier and certain aspects of other Treasure run n' gunners that make it REALLY seem like a shmup.
Hey, shmup actually works, so I may as well use and abuse it. Not only that, I can piss off anyone who thinks I said "shmuck".
Impossible? I can't believe those words coming from a guy who 1 lifed Xiga. I had it on the DC and found it rather enjoyable although the last boss was a real dissapointment + ending sucked.

Well, to be honest, I haven't played it since 2000. So I was a lot younger and not much of a shmupper last time I did play it.
I found it fairly hard myself. Certainly never cleared the thing on one credit, even if extra lives were fairly easy to come by.
We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
