Overall, this thread was success. Needs more post-grunge bashing though.

Also, is REM considered pre-grunge-post-grunge or pre-post-grunge?

IDK sometimes I feel like it all depends on the weather

Maybe it is pre-post-grunge (not to be confused with grunge, which is actually post-buttrock-buttrock.)

Not sure what REM has to do with this thread, but they are generally considered post-punk. At least they started out as post-punk.

I don't think REM recorded the song that this thread is named after.

Are you saying you think Dishwalla is REM? Because I don't see it.

Whatever, none of that changes the fact that REM is post-punk. :P

I can't follow this. If Stipe = proto-Corgan and (presumably) Corgan = proto-Dishwalla then REM = post-grunge??

Has REM really changed so much that they are now a new band which is post-grunge instead of post-punk? I thought their basic approach was still the same, but who cares anyway, I'm not a big fan of theirs.

REM Post punk?

Hmm...I always thought that post punk was more like bands like Joy Division and Three Imaginary Boys era The Cure.

REM was the U.S.'s The Smiths, and I never thought of them as "post punk".

They're also proto-emo. Just listen to Everybody Hurts. Or don't, that song is best left for the stereotypical broken hearted male.

REM sucks except for that song Sitting Still. And the catchy ditty about the end of ze welt.

Nah, that song kind of sucks too.

REM was at its best when they weren't famous like now.
From Automatic for the People onwards they started to suck.
I wouldn't call them post-punk. Just alternative rock.
Joy Division was much more doom then punk I guess.
They had a, still unequaled, unique sound. Such a shame that they hadn't more songs. New Order just can't compete.

Joy Division is pretty much the definition of post-punk... I can't believe I'm even getting involved in this discussion, but where Joy Division is involved, I feel the need to step in.

As for REM... by even discussing the subject you guys are admitting to more than is perhaps necessary. ;)

New Wave is like off-kilter art pop, e.g. Talking Heads.

Post-punk is kind of thoughtful indie rock with a lot of noise sometimes, e.g. Joy Division, Bauhaus.

Both were probably inspired by Bowie.

When I think of post-punk I think of The Birthday Party.

Joy Division is proto-goth lol

Post-punk is proto-goth, heh -- except for industrial bands like Einsturzende Neubauten and Skinny Puppy who also later became goth staples.

By the same token, New Wave (and New Romantic, Art rock, etc.) are proto-emo.

Unfortunately, in both cases the prototype was better than the finished product. ;)
