Science vs Religion in a nutshell

Post by shoe-sama »

SCIENCE CLASHES WITH RELIGION THE WORLD IS FLAT AND 6000 YEARS OLD

No.

Science and religion do completely different things the war between science and fiction is entirely fictional

No.

Science conflicts with religion because...
Knowing more about things tends to make one feel insignificant.
Namely the vast timescales and size of the universe or even the earth.
But other things such as biology and learning about brain functions can do it too. Anything that makes the individual feel insignificant.

Knowledge trivializes the existence of the individual.
Religion is existential usually.

naw I didn't know the other thread was still up lol

I'm just making a point as to why science and religion actually conflict to an extent.

The other thread is about atheism right?

Not particularly controversial. I doubt anyone would disagree with the fact that science and religion conflict to a certain degree. I still forsee at least 5 pages of argy bargy. Or a lock in a few hours

In the context of religion, aren't believers supposed to be insignificant compared to their God anyway?

Hmm, learning about science doesn't make me feel insignificant. I fills my heart with wonder. For instance, knowing that matter can't be created or destroyed means that each and every one of us has existed in part, and will continue to exist, forever.

Maybe for a moment, millions of years after we are dead, two of our particles will pass each other by as we meander through the cosmos, and maybe, even if just for a single moment, all of us will be one again before exploding to engage in another magnificent dance.

Religion says we're not alone.
Science says they think we are.

nobody likes being alone, so that's why alot of people would rather live in religious stupor, rather than feel useless and know everything.

You need to test this hypothesis. Easy to see how the demand for testable hypotheses leads the scientifically inclined to avoid the whole God business as a likely waste of time though.

I strongly disagree with this sentiment. A good read of Kenneth Miller's 'Finding Darwin's God' at least gives an example of a scientist who has found a secure and strong meeting ground between science and religion.

That aside however, I would say both science and religion inform different aspects of our life. The fictional conflict is because of the one dimensional thinking by people who cannot divorce materialistic and spiritual aspects of their lives.

The classic answer again is how Xians must deal with geology and biology. The answer of course is simple: The bible isn't a science text book, it is supposed to be a book of spiritual wisdom.

Where I think you are right however is that religion has filled more than a spiritual gap in the past; it has satisfied people's need to answer the big questions: why are we here? what does life mean? etc.

As science continues to demystify much of the world around us, I think less people feel a need to be religious. I can't comment on whether this is a good or bad thing, since many people who claim to be religious may have little or no belief anyway. I also think the drifting away from religion may be coming from how busy life has become in the 21st century. Ever talk with your grandparents? I think life wasn't so busy 40 or 50 years ago. Now people don't have time to go to church or anything else.

When you think about that, it's actually rather depressing.

Still, you're wrong.

Edit: Science makes me want to kill people.

Knowledge can turn up very gutwrenching thoughts when combined with philosophy.

Just what if the world was different?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3JCESdFNyw

To demonstrate, here's a compilation of various animated gifs by a graphics artist who goes by cyriak. No hidden message or anything, just images that are not normal. The more benign imagery will probably be among the more frightening ones. This is dependent on how much one has been desensitized of course.

I believe it's the philosphy portion that turns up thoughts about existence, but when you combine it with science or just knowledge in general, thoughts about how insignificant one is will inevitably get processed. Or at least that's how it works in my head. I don't have access to other peoples' thoughts so I don't know how it works out for everyone else.

I never figured you'd be one for existential crisis, shoe

This attacks everyone in their life however, I think. The realisation that you are just a walking mass of goo, with every emotion you hold dear being produced by a chemical squirting listlessly through the fleshy caverns of your body. That at some point, these substances will cease to be squirted, and every achievement, every thought and everything action that we have taken has all been for naught, and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

When it is comprehended that there is no God, then belief in a god will surely follow.

I think religion exists for the same reason as the placebo week in a birth control pillpack. Having worked with the developmentally disabled, I fantasized the institution as a microcosm of the normal spectrum, in which the very dullest are not the faithful, who fall in the middle, but the ones who are indifferent about what religion has done to the lives of everyone living.

So merely contributed to a stupid thread makes you feel insignificant since most people would just pass over your post. However, starting a new stupid thread makes you feel significant?

Science is the neutral between life and death, it can be matured to save lives or it can be abused to ruin them.

Religion was put in place to make sure science is used for the former, rather than the latter. A way of bonding people to a ideology that the weak in great numbers can be persuaded to overcome those who are strong.

I believe if you make a wish, say a prayer, or even make a bet, you have faith. Afterall, science is just a way to make money.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

"the souls of the weak"

Post by trivial »

Do the weak get ensouled for their weakness? Of soul? Of body? Like bodies bodied forth and got sold out by souls.

Where is the living body given its due? Was limbo made for it?

Isn't that the other way around ?!?
Religion says only humans on earth exist and then there's that made up god.
Science says we can't be the only 'intelligent' living things in universe.
