The World Ends With You (DS)

Post by Vexorg »

Is anyone here planning to get this one? On one hand, this looks like the type of game that fans of the "metroidvania" games would enjoy with the collection aspect and variety of different attacks. On the other hand the setting is something I have zero interest in, and I get the sneaking suspicion that this is the type of game that I'd play for 45 minutes and realize that I can't stand it (see also: Crisis Core FFVII.) I'd be interested to hear what other people think of this one.

I too would like to see a review from a human being. All the reviews say 'YES!', but my gut instinct says 'NO!'

I played the first day of this but I still don't understand what you're supposed to do. The battle system consists of playing DDR with your thumb on the top screen while simultaneously attacking enemies with fire on the bottom screen. Which is really weird, because I can't control where the bottom character moves very well at all.

I haven't played it enough though, so I can't say yay or nay.

I was interested because yes I am a Square fangirl. However I read a bit about the game and decided itd be a game Id play for a few days get bored with and then forget about it. Just looked a bit complicated in theory.

The battles seem frenetic and varied, which is cool. The setting and what I've heard of the soundtrack remind me a little of Jet Grind Radio, which is good.

However, the voices in battle sound incredibly grating, and the Kingdom Hearts team made it. So the story and characters basically read like Kingdom Hearts Remix...with bonus trendwhoring. (stat penalties for wearing "uncool" clothing wtffff)

"Dude who looks like Sora (and has amnesia like Roxas) fights a whole bunch of Heartless—I mean 'Noise'—to defeat this evil organization of magical anime bad guys who all dress similarly. Also at some point characters who seem remarkably similar to Riku and Kairi fight with you."

barffff

tl;dr: Even if it was extremely fun to play, I don't think I could ignore all the annoying cruft.

Looks like Persona 2 Lite with a better battle system, so I'll probably buy it at some point.

Actually, I expect it to play like Kingdom Hearts, with perks. I swear, if KH was just a bit harder, with a bit more to do, the fanbase would expand to include even those who hate RPGs. By the way, you don't play DDR at all. Think of it more like a fighting game, but what you press is on screen.

Hey, the Kingdom Hearts team decided to follow the trend. Big whoop, shooters follow more than just trend. Especially if they are the same company, or even worse, doujin. I swear those are Space Invader enemies in nomltest!

That's good news, I was wondering just how frantic this game is! IGN gave it a 9.0 and put it up there with Phantom Hourglass, in terms of DS RPG's!

The art style definitely reminds me of JSRF.

I actually really like this game. I'm not one for Nomura's art, but it doesn't bother me in this game. The soundtrack is awesome. The ability to level up pins (your attacks) and arrange them is really nice, too.

I'm afraid that if the game is only 7 days, and I'm on the third day, it isn't going to last long.

He did, and I very much despise him for it, but The World Ends With You is incredible. It really really is. Everything about it is just great... the gameplay is superb once you get used to it, the music is amazing, the art style is wonderful, hell, even the story is really neat.

Honestly, this is tied with Space Invaders Extreme for me for Best DS Game. It really is an awesome experience, and I highly recommend it.

Except for the amnesia part. I swear, every time that plot device is used, I just roll my eyes.

Oh for sure, Meteos is awesome. I love that one too. :) Though I seem to have lost my cart at the moment. :?

Erm... he hasn't made many games that take place in modern day has he? I just meant the environment and the JSR look of it was cool.

When people say Tetsuya Nomura, the first thing that comes to my mind is the character designs.

Well... then apparently his character designs work a lot better in a modern day Shibuya setting than they do in everything else he has ever done ever. :P

Yeah, they don't feel as shoehorned as with most FF characters he has created.

Same for me, not sure what to do. I would have bought it for 29.99, but 39.99 is a little too much especially when I think I am going to throw up as soon the emoness is going to start. Hell no problem paying 39.99 for R-Type Command though!

Too funky, hip, urban and emo-oriented. Not my kind. It's Radilgy in RPG form, only worse (and I don't like Radilgy).
It surely appeals those who have the gag reflex whenever a fantasy RPG gets released (and luckily for my tastes, they gag a lot ;) )
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Precisely. Makes me happy that working in a games shoppe to finance my studies has at least the advantage of checking out such crap first hand. How people got beyond that awful dialogue and that horrible music fails me. The visuals, especially the character designs, are overdone like a chavette. Teh horror.
