Neo Geo AES noobish question

Post by KindGrind »

I can't seem to find the info anywhere. Quite straightforward question, really.

Is the neo geo aes region free? If I buy a japanese aes and don't modify it, it'll only play jap games and nothing US out of the box, right?

Thanks for the explanations...

All Neo Geo cartridges host the same code; the system itself determines the region. So playing a Japanese cartridge on a U.S. system will give you 'the American experience.'

Generally speaking, U.S. region consoles will use code that causes games to be slightly censored (i.e. no blood, breasts don't bounce, English narration at the attract of Fatal Fury 3 instead of Japanese voice). Japan is different ("original"), and I think yet another territory is different as well (no blood + boob bounce, which is the way I like it actually).

Also note that there are differences between video output on different revisions of the hardware; NFG Games has a good rundown.
