Top X68k Shmups

Post by nimitz »

I was wondering wich games are your favorite X68k shmups (exclusive or not). Your top 10 or so.

I have been playing (trying) many X68000 shmups recently including doujin games.

I have played literally hundreds of them and "rated" most of them, mostly to know wich ones are worth spending time playing. I'm not done rating so I can't really put a list up yet(I have played about a hundred of them).

some of the better ones I have played(just a few).

Commercial

Nemesis 90' kai
Star Trader
Code Zero
Sol-Feace
Last Batallion (Override)
Phalanx
Cyber Core
Cros Fire EX

Doujin

ChoRenSha 68k (obviously)
Kukei
Intergral Arm
Rayer Shoot
Blue Wings 2
Galseed 1 & 2
Cuarto

Ill probably cover these games with more detail later in this topic.

Undeadline (big surprise, eh?)
Phalanx (much better than SNES/GBA)
Cotton
Scorpius (very weird take on the Force device)
Nemesis 90
Mahou Daisakusen (sp?) (Loading is horrible, however)

A couple questions, nimitz. Is Last Battalion actually any different than PCE Override? The available demo shows that they're very similar, but is it a new game entirely? Same question with Cyber Core. The PCE rev was a bit dull, but it was a good concept.

Don't know if it's the "best", but Thunder Force II. Find it, and enjoy it.

Try out Winkysoft's Olteus II, even though it's numbered as a sequel, it's a remake of the PC-88 game.

Cyber Core isn't doujin and is much better than the PCE port.

Darn, I was just starting to get over having missed out on a copy of that game after playing the PC-E port. Now I'll have to check out some videos.

I still don't like the Dragon Spirit style primary/secondary weapon system, though.

Thanks for the replies guys, what else do you like in the X68000 amazing library.

I had played Olteus II and for some reason I rated it as "poor". Guess ill play it more and see for myself.

I don't like the X68k Mahou port the hardware is just too far behind. (Mahou being a very fast and beautiful 1993 game) it just feels slow and sluggish.

For Las Battalion (override) I have not played the 68000 verison much yet. But it can almost be considered a sequel. The midi music of the X68 sounds much better. you have an option menu where you have 3 difficulty settings, the lowest feels like the pce version so this makes the game more challenging, lives and most importantly switch from 31khz to 15khz

Also the 1st and third level are completely different but the 2nd is the same (not sure about the rest). you have a nice animation when your ship is ready to fire a "bomb" and many little improvements here and there.

There's also Mid-Garts and of course a handful of other ports not mentioned (srsly what's the point with PCBs and MAME) like A-Jax
