Any of the released XRGBs will work:
XRGB-1
XRGB-2
XRGB-2+
and the
XRGB-3
If you can find an Microcom produced XRGB-2+ upscan convertor, it comes with an Component Video to Japanese 21-pin RGB adapter -- the easiest way to get your PS2 looking sharp on your HD LCD monitor. So all you'd need is a PS2 Component Video cable setup and you're all set... ^_~
There is an XRGB-2+ for sale in the Trading Section courtesy of fellow shmupper, Specineff:

I have that. I picked it up in GAME for 98p. Don't expect miracles. It's noticably better than SCART. The best res you can expect is 576p.Daigohji wrote:Anyone tried this? It gets pretty mixed reviews, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than an XRGB. Half the complaints seem to be about the picture being shrunk down when upscaled, but I don't know how well it handles just 480p.

try component.... even without a xrgb my tv looked all right. but it's gonna vary wildy from tv to tv. what brand of tv is it?
but really the only way to go is an xrgb with HD TVs

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

ok got it. its a 46 inch Samsung 650 lcd with the 120hz, i hooked up a friends ps3 and its incredible. gradius V looks fairly sharp on it to begin with but DDP DOJ and ESPGaluda looks VERY pixilated.

It will always look that way unless you use an XRGB for 2D. Really with HD it's just the way it goes. Well for someone who sees DDP and ESP playing on a HD TV via a PS3 it is.DDP DOJ and ESPGaluda looks VERY pixilated.
Even with an XRGB if you are using LCD, you have to worry about he TV's ability to scale 480p. Most seem to a fine job these days. Either way it should be no worse than the PS3 lag wise (Some swear there is but I can't say I notice it myself, none that screw me up while playing). Not unless your TV is older model wise.
I hate my HDTV for 2D (low res) unless it's through that XRGB, one of the best buys I've made.
