Old Games, New Sound: Shinobi 3

Post by Jedah Doma »

I just saw this on Youtube and loved it. It's a show that takes old games and puts new sound to them (sound effects and music). The first game featured is Shinobi 3. If only this could be done in the actual game.

Hmm... I kinda liked the announcer voice, but if there was ever a game where you wouldn't want to change the music..

Bleh. The music sounds worse than the original.

The non-shuriken mode sucks because you get them back as soon as you pick up an item.

I wonder what that "running in water" sound is.

Yeah, it needs a dedicated mode like Shadow Dancer has. :(

The no-shuriken bonus in any game but that is pretty lol. Take the original Shinobi arcade game: 'lol u are a pixel too far from the enemy, whiff and bonus destroy!'

MD Shadow Dancer had a good scoring system and the no-shuriken bonus was fun because you couldn't mess up in no-shuriken mode. The secret boss bonus is cool too. I don't remember the original Shinobi having a no-shuriken bonus. I used to play Shinobi III to get perfect bonuses but it became too annoying for the reason you mentioned. I think it's impossible to get all perfects anyway because you need to shoot a box in the exploding factory stage. Also there's infinite scoring in Zeed's lair.

Yeah, I suck, but I could only ever get that on 1-1 and 2-1, anyway. Still, a ninja wouldn't be bitchin' about a whiff.

That's because it's practically impossible in most levels  I can't really say if it's harder than doing so in Shinobi III - except that you can't simply avoid shurikens; if you're a bit too far from an enemy you'll toss a shuriken (or shoot a projectile, if you've upgraded). Making things worse, of course, are enemies that can be very nasty up close.

Probably not as bad as trying to get all the bonuses in a round of Duke Nukem 2, or the Bonus Bonus in Rise of the Triad (without saving)...

Definitely much harder than in Shinobi III; one wrong move and you're dead. I still try to go for it on the levels mentioned above, though, because you get a lot of points for it and it helps in getting extends.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can safely bump into any of the enemies not carrying blades, and also the big Chinese dudes; this is essential at times, particularly when dealing with the handgun-packing guys in prone position.

Cool, I'll have that in mind next time I give Shinobi a playthrough.

Is belly bumping the new bullet grazing?

I'd say it's different IMO. It's a nice re-imagining of the music. I like the original music myself, but the Genesis soundchip left a little to be desired.

I've totally thought about this (for ESP Ra.De. in particular). You can buy OST's w/ non-filtered music/sound that I'd love to find a way to throw on an mp3 player or some sort of audio storage device and connected to the sound chips on the PCB so that when a sound/song is addressed on the PCB it plays from the mp3 player. Problems come in regards to overlaying samples and such, but I'm sure somebody could figure it out :D

There's a Heavy Metal version of Mame allowing to run classics like Altered Beast with metal remixes of the original tunes as background music (by Megadriver).
I like the idea of remixing old school console games with new sounds and music. Mixing new sounds with graphical filters could result in some quite interesting audiovisual remixes. A hacking tool for doing that would be cool.

That's hot. Someone should contact MAME team and see if anyone would pursue a SE/MUSIC replacement app.!
