Unique Bosses

Post by shoe-sama »

HEY GUYS

LETS MAKE A LIST OF ALL THE BOSSES THAT HAVE NOVEL WAYS OF BEING DAMAGED
AS IN
BOSSES THAT CAN TAKE DAMAGE IN WAYS OTHER THAN BEING SHOT AT FOR 30 SECONDS

THEN HAVE THEM FIGHT TO THE DEATH
YEAH YEAH YEAH
GREAT IDEA

ChoRenSha Boss 1 - get them to shoot each other
Space Invaders Extreme - I didn't play this, but there's one boss that's behind you and you reflect your shots off enemies to hit him. There's some other bosses too.
Ether Vapor Boss 5 - use charge shot to reflect his drill back at him
Shienryu Explosion - uh lol I remember from Smraedis's vids that there was some boss where you guide his homing laser back to him

HEY YOU KNOW WHAT
WE NEED MORE BOSSES THAT ARE LIKE THIS

YEAHYEAHYEAH

there's probably some bosses that are like this in score attack games but like i dunno I don't play them

and I think you get more points for killing bosses with the magic attack they're weak against in sol divide

Last guy of Ikaruga - you can't hit him until the fight is over.

granada x- stage 5? boss

You have to reflect shots of a wall to get past its shield.

shikigami no shiro 2- stage 4? boss

The orbs on its sides restrict the screen space in which you can move.

Pretty much every R-type game has a boss in which you need to employ special maneuvers to do damage.

hmm yeah, r-type does like to make use of the charge shot and pod launch

now let's see what else I remember

Gradius V's heart boss can only be hurt after knocking down its barrier
G Darius has a similar type of boss I believe
I guess captain captures in Darius Gaiden and G Darius might qualify too

Came from Radiant Silvergun, but it's possible the idea has been used somewhere before.

Good thread, shoe.

How about the second boss in Rayforce, you have to reveal the core to damage it.

Yeah, Gradius Gaiden's final boss couldn't be hurt until he settled down into his final form. Of course, he's a Gradius boss, so it's not like you were in much danger anyway.

Aside from the ones mentioned, the only other unique boss I can think of right now is the Lucifer-like boss from In the Hunt.

Maybe Metal Black, since you have to first collect the energy for survive the ultimate attack of the boss.

I like that one.

Also, what about the archetypal Toaplan bosses? Two types:

1.) Giant tank
2.) Two giant tanks that work in formation (especially the Daisenpuu/Twin Cobra bosses that lock together for extra firepower)

Hitogata Happa. You have to suicide-ram; shooting does very little damage.

lol that tech bonus thing is pretty awesome

Anyways for the Rayforce boss, it felt like shooting to me lol and that the core was just another form.

Last boss of Gun Frontier is a ohko battle where you have to shoot a bullet through the boss's shields at the right time.

Wait for the bosses of Rayforce to time out. They will blow up by themselves.

Does that count?

Not in Hitogata Happa. When the bosses time out they don't die automatically. Instead the screen fills with bullets, and you are as good as dead.

Zeroigar has a special sinergy: the special weapon that hurls slow solid balls is quite useful against bosses because the weak mines can sometimes land in their interior for massive damage, but the evasive crocodile-shaped boss that constantly shifts away to random locations makes the player's job too easy by telefragging itself all over the improvised minefield.

Isn't there a boss in Under Defeat whose missiles you can shoot and cause to fall back and hit him? Or am I thinking of a different shmup?

IIRC you can also lead one of Shienryu Explosion's bosses into hurting himself if you can lead his homing energy ball back in to him (though I might be wrong on this).

If it counts, theres the "Tetris boss" in Shiki 2, who can be hurt not only by shooting but also by lining up a row of the same-colored blocks.

The final? boss of R-Type II. You have to hit him with the reflect shot at a certain angle (walls and whatnot); I still haven't figured him out.

Under Defeat's amazing third boss I'm pretty sure gets damaged by the missiles you knock back at it.

What about Guwange's true last boss? I remember something was up with him.

The final boss of Mushihimesama Futari.
You have to buy another PCB with a revision to kill it within 1cc.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...

Andor Genesis was definitely cool back then. At first it tricks you because it's the only flying target that flies below you (ie must be bombed). Then in order to bomb its weak spots you have to get closer to it, while avoiding bullets. It was clever.

PSYCHOSIS for the TG16.

Every dam boss in that game was unique if not just plain weird.

The stage 5 boss of Dangun Feveron has a chance of being invincible - some kind of bug where his main core doesn't open properly and you can't do any damage.

Probably slightly disappointing if you're on track for a 1LC and it happens.

In Fantasy Zone, you can have the final boss follow you and trick him into colliding with his own tail.
